NSW Establish Sport And Recreation Sector Recovery Working Group

New South Wales (NSW) Acting Minister for Sport, Geoff Lee, announced the establishment of a Sport and Recreation Sector Recovery Working Group during a weekly teleconference with sport sector CEOs.

This decision comes as the entirety of Australia and most of the world grapple with the effects of the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic that has put a stop to most sporting competitions.

The effects of this has meant most sporting organisations are undergoing a period of financial and operational crisis, meaning the creation of this group is essential to support the future of Australia’s sports economy.

The Sport and Recreation Sector Recovery Working Group, which will be coordinated by the Office of Sport and Sport NSW, will bring together representatives from government and the sector to work collaboratively on issues and develop solutions for the sector both during and after the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic.

The group will be made up of representatives from a cross section of State Sporting Organisations (SSOs) and State Sporting Organisations for people with disabilities (SSODs), as well as peak bodies across the sector.

The group will initially work to develop a Draft COVID-19 Recovery Plan, aimed at outlining priorities, resourcing and recovery actions for NSW’s sport and active recreation sector.

The outlined purpose of the Recovery Plan is to assist the sport and active recreation sector navigate through COVID-19, shifting the attention to activities and initiatives that will leave the sector in as strong a position as possible following the pandemic.

The Sport and Recreation Sector Recovery Working Group will provide regular updates in future NSW Office of Sport newsletters as the Draft Recovery Plan progresses.
