ueensland Rugby League (QRL) have confirmed the appointment of chief operating officer, Rohan Sawyer, as the organisations’ new chief executive officer.

QRL chairman, Bruce Hatcher, announced the appointment after current CEO Robert Moore revealed he will leave QRL in October.

Sawyer, who is set to be a speaker at the upcoming Women in Sport Summit 2021 at USC Stadium on the Sunshine Coast, has held the role of chief operating officer at QRL since 2018.

Hatcher said Sawyer has demonstrated major achievements through his time at QRL.

“Rohan has done an outstanding job while in his role as chief operating officer,” Hatcher said.

“It is a feather in the cap of our organisation to be able to promote from within and on merit, as it will only help the QRL maintain momentum moving forward.

“Rohan is a true sports administrator and business leader who has strong relationships across the broader community, state and national rugby league bodies.

“Additionally, he offers a deep understanding of the administration of rugby league, the National Rugby League and the Australian Rugby League Commission, funding to members and the role of the Rugby League Players Association,” he said.

On his appointment, Saywer said: “I am humbled and excited to be given this opportunity by the QRL board.”

“We’ve got great people here at the QRL, and everyone has contributed to where we are today.

“In particular, I’d like to make special mention of Rob Moore, who is the walking encyclopedia of rugby league.

“The QRL is in a position of strength because of his leadership over the past 10 years.

“It has been a privilege to learn from him.

“I think we can all take immense pride and satisfaction from a number of recent projects, including the launch of the QRL Female Strategy and the success of the BHP Premiership.

“Off the field, we’ve been able to significantly increase our own sourced revenue by securing long term partnerships with leading brands including Auswide Bank, PUMA, and Shell.

“These relationships ultimately allow us to invest further in our competitions and pathways for all participants to enjoy the game across the state,” Sawyer said.
