Lewis Hamilton On His Mission To Increase Representation In F1

Seven-Time Formula One world champion, Lewis Hamilton, says he hopes the Hamilton Commission can help others “avoid the lonely journey” the driver has been on.

The Hamilton Commission was established in order to increase the representation of Black people in UK motorsport.

The Mercedes driver and the first black champion in motorsport history decided to create the organisation when he noticed the competition’s lack of representation in an end-of-season photo back in 2019.

Recently speaking with American broadcaster ABC ahead of Sunday’s inaugural Miami Grand Prix, Hamilton noted that it has been a lonely journey in light of being the only black family in the competition.

Hamilton said: “I have been racing for 29 years, professional for 16, and most often been the only person of colour in the room.”

“When I would ask the question, there was no real greet feedback.

As a result, Hamilton said he created the Hamilton commission, which “starts with education and understanding,” said Hamilton.

Hamilton continued: “We have put together this body of research to try and understand what those barriers are.”

“Not only in our industry where we have over 40,000 jobs but only one per cent come from black backgrounds, there are real systemic issues within the educational system,” said Hamilton.

Funded by Lewis Hamilton directly,  the Hamilton Commission has started Mission 44,  in order to create more representation, support and empowerment for under-served groups.

Hamilton currently sits in 7th position ahead of Sunday’s Maimi Grand Prix, trailing 58 points behind  Scuderia Ferrari’s, Charles Leclerc, who sits at first on the ladder.
