Melbourne Victory To Represent Australia In Inaugural AFC Women’s Club Championship

Melbourne Victory is set to become the first Australian women’s club to play in the inaugural Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Women’s Club Championship, taking place in South Korea.

To support the Victory’s opportunity, Global Victoria will aid the club’s travel to South Korea, in a partnership that was announced with the club’s selection into the tournament.

Melbourne Victory head coach, Jeff Hopkins, said he is excited to be a part of the historic tournament with the support of Global Victoria.

“It’s a real honour to be selected to represent Australia at this inaugural AFC Women’s Club Championship.

“This tournament will provide a tremendous experience for our girls to compete on the global stage and with the support of Global Victoria, we’re looking forward to proudly representing Australia and the W-League,” Mr Hopkins said.

The tournament is set to feature a team from each of China (Jiangsu Suning), Japan (Nippon TV Beleza) and host South Korea (Incheon Hyundai Steel Red Angels), competing in a round-robin format tournament between November 26-30.

The announcement comes after a successful 2018-19 Westfield W-League season for Melbourne Victory, where they finished atop the ladder but fell to Perth Glory in the semi-final.

The 2019-20 Westfield W-League season has also just begun for the Victory, starting with a disappointing 3-0 loss to Sydney FC on Sunday.

Being given the chance on the international club stage however, is an opportunity for the Victory to prove the strength of Australia’s W-League against Asia’s best clubs in a weeks’ time.
