LA28 Unveils Strategic Plans as PlayLA Surpasses One Million Registrations

With three years to go before Los Angeles hosts its third Olympic Games, LA28 organisers have outlined major legacy initiatives and revealed early details of the Olympic competition schedule.

At a recent event held at the LA Memorial Coliseum, LA28 CEO Reynold Hoover, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, and city leaders welcomed 700 children from the city’s PlayLA programme—underscoring a dual focus on grassroots participation and elite sport.

One Million Registrations for PlayLA

Backed by up to USD 160 million in joint funding from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and LA28, PlayLA is a cornerstone of the city’s Olympic legacy plan.

Open to children aged 3 to 17, the programme offers access to more than 40 Olympic and Paralympic sports—ranging from athletics and aquatics to para surfing and adaptive swimming. It has already surpassed one million registrations.

Designed to support healthier lifestyles and increase access to sport, PlayLA reflects a long-term strategy to foster inclusion and identify future talent.

Competition Schedule Prioritises Fans and Global Audiences

LA28 also shared key details of the Olympic competition schedule, which spans 18 days and includes 844 ticketed events. Developed in partnership with Olympic Broadcasting Services and international federations, the schedule was recently approved by the IOC Executive Board.

A major change is the reversal of the traditional order of athletics and swimming. Athletics will now take place in week one, with swimming moving to the second week—enabling the transformation of 2028 Stadium into the largest Olympic swimming venue to date, with 38,000 seats.

Venice Beach will host the first medal event—triathlon—leveraging the city’s iconic landscapes for broadcast appeal. Day 15 will feature the busiest slate, with 16 team medal matches and 19 individual finals.

A Dual Legacy: Olympics and Paralympics

The LA28 Games will open on 14 July 2028 with a dual ceremony at the LA Memorial Coliseum and SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. The Closing Ceremony is scheduled for 30 July at the Coliseum.

In a historic first, Los Angeles will also host the 2028 Paralympic Games, reinforcing the city’s commitment to accessibility, inclusion, and long-term community impact.
