The Essendon Football Club completed a significant visit to the Northern Territory in April, reinforcing its long-term First Nations Strategy through deep engagement with communities across the Tiwi Islands and West Arnhem Land.
The initiative is a prerequisite for the club’s Next Generation Academy (NGA), ensuring a visible and sustainable pathway for Indigenous talent in the club’s designated recruitment zones.
Commenting on the initiative, AFLW player, Busch, said: “Inspiring young people, especially girls, is something I feel incredibly privileged to do.”
She also noted the “outstanding” talent present in the Top End. Gaylor added that the experience provided a greater appreciation for the club’s ties to the region following her participation in the AFLW Dreamtime game in Darwin.
For the players involved, the visit served as a vital link to the club’s storied history with First Nations icons such as Michael Long, Dean Rioli, and Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti. Beyond the oval, the group participated in cultural experiences at Nourlangie Rock and the Marrawuddi Arts and Culture Centre, deepening their understanding of the region’s heritage.
Essendon’s Strategy and Growth Lead, Kristen Bull, emphasised that the club’s presence in West Arnhem Land and the Tiwi Islands is built on genuine, multi-year relationships rather than fleeting visits.
“We’re committed to building genuine, long-term relationships and creating opportunities for young people in these communities,” Bull said. The strategy aims to ensure that future “Bombers” can emerge directly from these remote NGA zones.
The delegation, which included AFLW players Mia Busch and Amy Gaylor alongside The Long Walk’s Jack Peris, focused on balancing elite athletic development with community connection:
The visit precedes one of the biggest dates on the AFL calendar, with Essendon set to face Richmond in the men’s Dreamtime at the ‘G clash on May 22.
