Essendon Football Club has partnered with AFL Victoria to expand multicultural engagement and participation in Australian Rules Football across Melbourne’s Hume region, under the Cultural Diversity Community Connect initiative.
The partnership forms part of AFL Victoria’s broader strategy to lift multicultural involvement in the sport from 17% to 22% statewide.
Hume is one of Victoria’s most culturally diverse areas, with large Arabic-speaking and Turkish communities, making it a relevant location for participation growth. Rather than relying solely on traditional club-based recruitment, the initiative has prioritised engagement through established cultural and educational institutions that local families already interact with on a daily basis.
Two key partners in the program have been Maarefa School in Campbellfield and ICMG Turkish School in Broadmeadows. Both serve as community hubs for families of Middle Eastern and Turkish backgrounds and have hosted introductory “come-and-try” football sessions for children aged 5–12.
The engagement also included visits to Essendon’s AFLW match at Windy Hill, offering families a first-hand introduction to the match-day environment. These experiences are being positioned not only as pathways to playing the sport, but as broader cultural touchpoints that connect new communities with local sporting institutions.
The program is set to continue with an upcoming tour of Essendon’s elite training facility, The Hangar, providing students with exposure to high-performance environments and the club’s operational and cultural framework.
The club has indicated that the success of the initiative will be measured not only by participation numbers but by the depth of relationships developed with families and community leaders.
Strategic Perspective
The initiative aligns with key participation and fan growth priorities across the AFL system.
The league has placed increasing focus on community outreach in growth corridors and culturally diverse municipalities, reflecting a larger trend towards grassroots engagement as both a participation and audience development tool.
By strengthening relationships with cultural and educational institutions, Essendon and AFL Victoria are looking to establish long-term pathways that could translate into increased junior participation, volunteer involvement, and eventually supporter conversion, forming part of the sport’s wider market development strategy.
