The Ulster Rugby Foundation’s commitment to nurturing the sport underscores the importance of backing grassroots efforts, which cultivate the next generation of players.

As planning begins for future initiatives, the success of this Golf Day may serve as a catalyst for more similar events, reinforcing the foundation’s mission to uplift community rugby.

With the continued support of local stakeholders, the outlook for grassroots rugby in Ulster remains optimistic, reflecting the vibrant sporting culture that the region proudly supports.

Super Netball Report Suggests Promising Growth

With a solid foundation established for its long-term vision, Netball Australia has officially commenced its significant development initiatives.

The organisation is progressing methodically, backed by a remarkable third consecutive operating surplus, which surged almost threefold to AUD$650,833 in 2024, the highest figure recorded since 2012.

This positive financial outcome was achieved concurrently with a reduction in debt, decreasing from AUD$4.2 million to AUD$3 million, thanks to a structured repayment plan aiming for full reconciliation by mid-2027.

Netball Australia’s CEO, Stacey West, attributes this success to a record-breaking Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) season, the enduring appeal of the world No.1 Australian Diamonds, and a robust participation rate exceeding one million nationwide, as these elements have combined to create a secure platform for future growth.

“It was a vital year to establish our standing, and the strong financial results reflect our dedication,” West stated, highlighting the essential nature of netball’s continued popularity and participation,” West said.

The year 2024 was a pivotal turning point for netball, West, added: “We needed to reset and deliver, which we did successfully. We focused on instilling confidence within the system and reassuring our investors and partners, allowing us to steer forward with strategic decision-making,” she said.

As the 10-year strategic plan approaches its conclusion, the framework for Suncorp Super Netball 2.0 is taking shape in anticipation of the next broadcasting deal post-2026.

Despite the well-documented financial challenges stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, the healthier balance sheet disclosed in the 2024 Annual Report empowers Netball Australia to make bolder investments during this crucial phase.

The financial success is mirrored by record metrics for attendances, viewership and membership across six of the eight teams involved in SSN.

Key figures from the 2024 financial year include:

  • SSN Attendance Record: A total of 366,222 spectators attended matches over 14 rounds, representing a 25% year-on-year increase, culminating in an impressive average of 6,000 fans per game, the highest attendance recorded for a female sports league in Australia.
  • Broadcast Success: The partnership with Foxtel and Kayo has yielded an 18% increase in average viewership, equating to 57,000 viewers per round—the best result in three years.
  • Increased Ticket Sales: Ticket sales for Diamonds events have surged by 50%, facilitating greater revenue as the national team shifts towards larger venues.
  • Sponsorship Renewals: Significant sponsorship support continues with five companies—Origin Energy, Asics, Virgin Australia, Westfield, and Suncorp—renewing long-term agreements. Woolworths has also resumed its support for a revamped Woolworths NetSetGo program following a successful six-month pilot across 25 centres.

The data from the Annual Report will serve as a critical foundation for media rights negotiations ahead of the new deal commencing in 2027, with Netball Australia continuing its collaboration with the Foxtel Group.

The strengthening of governmental relationships and partnership initiatives has proven impactful, exemplified by the introduction of the First Nations carnival in Melbourne in September 2024.

Internally, significant appointments were made, with Megan Simpson taking on the role of executive general manager of Netball and Ben Slack appointed as EGM of Commercial and Brand.

Balancing debt repayment accrued during the 2020-2021 period with the current flourishing state and future ambitions represents a delicate task for West.

The upcoming home World Cup is anticipated to be transformative, promising to create growth and a lasting legacy.

Coupled with a new media rights deal and the evolution of Suncorp Super Netball into its next phase, the sport is poised for a dynamic future.

Highlighting the commitment each team is making towards reaching larger audiences and boosting viewership, West said that their focus will remain in promoting the fantastic game to existing enthusiasts and to new followers who will come to love the sport.

Vanessa Low Elected Chair of WPA Athletes’ and Sport Committees

In a significant development for global para sports, Vanessa Low, has been elected to three pivotal roles: chairperson of the World Para Athletics Athletes’ Committee, chair of the WPA Sport Committee, and a board member of the newly established World Para Sport Unit.

Commenting on her roles, Low, said: “It was a big compliment. Especially the first position on the Athletes’ Committee — that was an elected role.”

“My peers chose me to represent them, which gave me belief that I’m someone who not only knows a lot of people, but someone who listens and passes on others’ voices too.

“I’ve always wanted to leave the sport better than I found it. Now I’ve found allies to actually do that,” she said.

Her involvement in the committees goes beyond typical athletic engagement; she is at the forefront of vital discussions concerning rule changes, competition structures, and the representation frameworks that affect para athletes.

On creating athlete feedback, Low, said: “We’ve just launched a new anonymous form so athletes can raise concerns safely, from anywhere in the world.”

“That feedback helps us go to World Para Athletics and say, ‘Here’s what’s really happening’,” she said.

Importantly, Low recognises that her perspective is one of many, understanding that true advocacy often requires stepping aside from personal experiences.

“Sometimes what comes up doesn’t align with what I’ve been through. But if I’ve heard enough people say it’s a problem, then we have to find a way to act,” Low said

“That’s hard when you sometimes have to put your own views second, but it’s what real advocacy looks like,” she said.

Her additional responsibilities on the Sport Committee, attained through her role as chairperson, grant her influence over critical components such as qualification standards, event formats, and classification rules, areas that, while often overlooked by many athletes, are crucial for the future of para sports.

Low also emphasises the significance of geographical representation in discussions, ensuring that the dialogue includes voices from across continents rather than being dominated by Western perspectives.

Her leadership style is characterised not only by conviction but also by a compassionate understanding of the complexities within para sports.

She candidly addresses the need for conflict resolution and compromise, stressing the importance of moving forward even amidst differing opinions.

Beyond her athletic roles, Low serves on the World Para Sport Unit Board, designed to advance sports transitioning to their own international federations away from the International Paralympic Committee, including para athletics.

“We’re moving from a movement to a professional product. There’s money in it, there are broadcast rights, ticket sales,” Low said.

“But the power is still in the visibility. When para sport does well, it has a flow-on effect for the entire disability community.

“We go from Games to Games, and then we’re sometimes forgotten in the middle.

“We need to build the ‘in-between’ – the Grand Prix circuit, showcase events, more access. That’s the next step,” she asserted, reflecting on the need for sustained engagement in the para sports landscape,” she said.

As for the legacy she seeks to leave behind, Low expressed a profound intention that she wants to be known as someone who listens and someone who lived what they believed in.

This ambition encapsulates her dedication to fostering an inclusive and vibrant framework for para sports moving forward.

Formula 1 Agree Extension to race in Miami until 2041

Formula 1 has confirmed a long-term extension of the Miami Grand Prix, locking in the event through to 2041 and making it the longest-contracted race on the F1 calendar.

The deal, signed with promoter South Florida Motorsports, strengthens F1’s presence in the United States and highlights Miami’s growing stature in the global sporting scene.

Commenting on this extension, Stefano Domenicali, chief executive of Formula 1, said, “In just three years, the Miami Grand Prix has established itself as one of the most important and spectacular events on our calendar.”

“This agreement marks a critical milestone that bolsters our presence in America and cements our relationship with a growing and passionate fan base.” Domenicali said.

First held in 2022, the Miami Grand Prix has quickly become one of the most popular events in the sport, blending high-speed racing with entertainment and attracting fans from across the country and around the world.

The race has had a substantial economic impact, contributing over USD$1 billion to the local economy in its first three years.

Beyond financial benefits, organisers have implemented internship programmes, supported local charities, and backed small businesses in South Florida, further embedding the event within the community.

South Florida Motorsports’ efforts have been formally recognised, with the organisation receiving the 2024 Formula 1 Promoter of the Year award for its execution and dedication to fan experience.

Tom Garfinkel, managing partner of the Formula 1 Crypto.com Miami Grand Prix, called the extension a testament to collective effort.

“To have been granted this extension after only our third event speaks to our firm belief that the Miami Grand Prix is here to stay,” Garfinkel said.

“Our intent from the beginning has been to create a world-class race that embodies the spirit of Miami vibrant, inclusive, and culturally significant.” he added.

The 2024 edition of the Grand Prix drew a record 275,000 attendees and saw McLaren’s Lando Norris claim his first Formula 1 victory, while Abbi Pulling secured back-to-back wins in the F1 Academy.

The race also delivered the highest US television audience for an F1 event, attracting 3.1 million viewers.

As Formula 1 and South Florida Motorsports look ahead, the renewed partnership underscores a shared commitment to community involvement and fan engagement, setting the stage for a strong future for motorsport in the US.

Tasmania Moves Away From Public-Private Relationship, Seeks Loan For Hobart Stadium

The Tasmanian government has decided to forgo potential private sector partnerships in favour of funding the proposed Hobart stadium independently, utilising borrowings through the Macquarie Point Development Corporation (MPDC).

This decision, reported by the ABC, reveals the government’s intention to construct the stadium primarily using debt rather than engaging in a public-private partnership (PPP).

The latest approach seeks to leverage existing commitments of AUD$630 million from state, federal, and AFL funding, with the cabinet approving the transition last week after a market-sounding exercise informed by advice from Perth’s Paxon Group and the Melbourne-based Infrastructure Advisory Group.

Shifting away from a PPP model, which the government deemed carried excessive risk and could jeopardise tight timelines, the strategy involves a “design and construct” approach.

The government plans to recoup some funds by selling parcels within the broader Macquarie Point precinct, including 17,000 square metres of mixed-use and Antarctic precinct space, alongside an underground multi-storey car park at Regatta Point.

Nonetheless, these sales are unlikely to fully cover the anticipated loan, believed to exceed AUD$200 million.

The current stadium cost estimate stands at AUD$775 million, though external quantity surveyors have hinted at figures closer to AUD$900 million.

With the state government contributing AUD$375 million, the federal government’s share at AUD$240 million, and the AFL supplying AUD$15 million, a shortfall of at least AUD$145 million, potentially more, remains.

While numerous public infrastructure funders, including Tetris Capital and Capella Capital, expressed interest in a PPP, Business, Industry and Resources Minister, Eric Abetz, reaffirmed that the government’s experts advised against such partnerships, claiming they would ultimately disadvantage the state financially and prolong the project timeline.

However, opposing views persist, Plenary Group’s managing director, Damien Augustinus, contended that a PPP could yield enhanced innovation and investment while ensuring more efficient delivery timelines, where he asserted that the government’s choice obstructs the potential for a coherent, integrated approach to the Macquarie Point precinct.

Independent economist, Saul Eslake, provided a critical perspective on PPPs, suggesting that while private sector efficiencies are often assumed, they can carry hidden costs that ultimately impact the public sector financially.

Eslake argued that using the MPDC for borrowing could obscure true public debt levels, injecting complexity into fiscal accountability.

Independent MLC, Ruth Forrest, expressed cautious approval of the government’s direction, signalling that rejecting a PPP could sway her vote, though she still seeks clarity on operational aspects of the stadium.

Strong public sentiment on transparency resonates, with some advocating for a more open discussion about the financial implications for Tasmanian taxpayers.

As contention surrounding the project continues, the government insists on maintaining its pledge of a AUD$375 million cap, where the Greens have voiced disappointment, labelling the revised funding model a significant betrayal of promises made to the public, arguing that the entire stadium funding proposal warrants reconsideration.

This situation highlights the complexities and inherent challenges of public infrastructure financing and underscores the ongoing scrutiny on governmental decisions amid evolving financial landscapes.

Sports Execs Head To Washington Over Future Of Broadcasting

In an intriguing intersection of politics and sports, a pivotal Senate Committee hearing is set to take place next week, addressing the evolving landscape of sports broadcasting.

Scheduled for Tuesday, May 6, at 10 a.m. ET, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, chaired by Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas), will gather testimonies from prominent executives representing three major U.S. sports leagues.

Bill Koenig from the NBA, David Proper from the NHL, and Kenny Gersh from MLB will discuss key policy issues stemming from the shifting ways Americans consume live professional sports.

As outlined in the committee’s press release, the focus will be on how traditional over-the-air broadcasts are increasingly complemented, or sometimes replaced, by digital platforms and subscription services.

The current sports broadcasting framework is viewed by many as antiquated, where fans often find themselves unable to view live games due to blackouts tied to local or national contractual rights, despite the technological capabilities that allow for access to various forms of entertainment on demand.

Streaming services have begun to alleviate some of these frustrations, offering crucial relief by broadcasting games without blackout restrictions, notably in leagues like Major League Soccer, where the MLS Season Pass on Apple TV+ grants access to all games for a reasonable monthly fee.

However, for sports leagues such as MLB, NBA, and NHL, regional sports networks retain most local broadcasting rights, compelling fans to either sign up for expensive cable packages or multiple streaming services to catch their favourite teams.

A topic likely to emerge during the hearing includes the rapid expansion of streaming services. As leagues further divide their rights into smaller packages, fans are faced with the burden of subscribing to a multitude of services like Apple TV+, Amazon Prime Video, or Disney’s ESPN, to keep up with their teams.

Senator Cruz is expected to query league executives about their strategies for bundling these offerings to prevent spiralling costs for consumers.

Cruz emphasising that the accessibility of games has diminished due to the proliferation of costly apps and exclusive deals and that the hearing aims to scrutinise how leagues plan to keep sports accessible and affordable for their dedicated fans.

Another critical issue anticipated to arise is the NFL’s aggressive approach to its streaming strategy, where the league In a departure from tradition, the league has been exploring opportunities to broadcast games on Friday and Saturday nights, potentially encroaching upon the time slots traditionally reserved for high school and college football.

The NFL’s media rights structure has been shaped by past legal challenges, including a 1961 federal ruling regarding exclusive contracts, prompting the establishment of the Sports Broadcasting Act, a legislative framework that has allowed sports leagues to negotiate broadcasting contracts collectively.

The Act still enforces restrictions on the NFL regarding Friday and Saturday night games during key periods.

Despite an invitation from Senator Cruz to represent the NFL during the hearing, the league declined, citing scheduling conflicts, though it did offer to provide information to the committee.

With the NFL aggressively pursuing new partnerships with streaming platforms, as evidenced by its extensive Christmas Day schedule this year, the hearing may serve as a critical moment for stakeholders in the sports broadcasting realm.

As the media landscape evolves, it becomes increasingly important for leagues to strike a balance between maximising revenue and ensuring the accessibility that fans expect.

Leagues selected for this year’s program will receive funding, access to coaching resources, and promotional support through the Guardians’ platforms.

Commenting on the program, Tanisha Velez, director of the Roberto Clemente League, said, “We are incredibly grateful and humbled by the support.”

“Beyond baseball and softball, our mission is to rebuild community togetherness at Roberto Clemente Park,” she said.

Velez also noted that 93% of their players identify as Latino/a and that the funding helps cover registration fees, uniforms and equipment.

She added that the league also advocates for safer playing fields, which benefit high school athletes throughout Cleveland.

Eligible youth leagues are encouraged to apply for Play Ball CLE grants, with a focus on accessibility and inclusion regardless of background or ability.

Emmanuel Clase, Cleveland Guardians all-time saves leader and All-Star closer has been named ambassador for the initiative.

“Ever since I first picked up a glove, my dream was to make it to the big leagues,” Clase said.

“Baseball gave me that path, and now I’m proud to help bring this program to kids right here in Cleveland so they can chase their dreams just like I did,” he said.

Several Guardians players and coaches, including Gavin Williams, Lane Thomas, Cade Smith, Bo Naylor, Gabriel Arias, Shane Bieber, José Ramírez, Stephen Vogt, Kai Correa and Craig Albernaz, will act as ambassadors for Guardians Youth Baseball and Softball throughout the season.

Partner leagues will also receive limited use of team branding, digital promotion, and invitations to Progressive Field home games and events.

Educational support will also be provided in collaboration with MLB, USA Baseball, the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society and the Positive Coaching Alliance.

Female only coaching course paves the way for next generation

Cricket Victoria has marked a significant milestone with the launch of its inaugural Female Only Advanced Coaching Course, which aims to empower the next generation of female cricket coaches throughout the state.

Conducted at the CitiPower Centre, this pioneering course attracted 24 enthusiastic participants, notably including members of the Afghanistan Women’s team, Nahida Sapan and Shabnam Ahsan.

Reflecting on the experience, Nahida and Shabnam, said: “We’re really happy to have taken part in the Female Only Advanced Coaching Course.”

“It was a great learning experience that helped us grow our coaching skills and connect with other women in cricket,” they said.

Cricket Victoria’s Community Coach Development Specialist, Chris Harris, added: “As the first of many Female Only Advanced Coaching Courses, we hope to generate future growth in female cricket across Victoria.”

“This is a step forward in encouraging female coaches to create quality cricket learning environments for their teams, where players of all abilities can have fun and learn the skills of the game,” Harris said.

The course received valuable support from Cricket Australia, CommBank’s Growing Cricket for Girls Fund, and the Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA).

It focused on equipping participants with essential technical coaching abilities while emphasising the importance of fostering a positive and engaging learning atmosphere.

This dual approach is designed to ensure that young female cricketers feel supported, motivated, and encouraged to develop their skills.

Such collaboration is anticipated to inspire and mentor aspiring female coaches, ultimately contributing to the growth of women’s cricket in Victoria and beyond.
