Yahoo Sports Selling Rivals to On3 Ownership Group

In a significant move within the college sports landscape, Yahoo Sports has confirmed the sale of Rivals to the On3 ownership group, led by entrepreneur, Shannon Terry.

This transition, which marks a pivotal moment for both entities, includes Yahoo Sports acquiring an ownership stake in the newly formed aggregate group.

Once a co-founder of Rivals, Shannon Terry, was integral to its acquisition by Yahoo for approximately $100 million (AUD$155 million) in 2007.

Following that, he established the On3 network in 2021 and had previously founded 247, which was sold to CBS in 2015.

Commenting on the acquisition, Terry, expressed enthusiasm for harnessing the legacy of Rivals, pointing out the platform’s established reputation within the recruiting sector, with plans for forthcoming investments aimed at bolstering recruiting efforts, high school sports coverage, and engaging college fan bases.

While the specifics of the transaction remain undisclosed, such as the valuations of Rivals and the On3 ownership group, as well as Yahoo’s percentage in the parent company—the partnership is set to enhance Yahoo Sports’ influence in the college sports arena.

Notably, Yahoo Sports will obtain a seat on the parent company’s board and have substantial opportunities for expanding content distribution and subscription growth.

Terry also conveyed excitement about collaborating once again with Yahoo Sports, noting a shared vision of mutual benefit.

He highlighted Yahoo’s extensive distribution capabilities and robust editorial framework as key assets that will contribute to the growth initiatives for both On3 and Rivals.

The integration of Rivals and On3 promises to enhance user experience, as subscribers will gain access across both platforms, capitalising on their respective strengths.

On3’s broader focus on college athletics complements Rivals’ prominent reputation in recruiting rankings and content.

The agreement is expected to be concluded by the end of June, signifying a dynamic shift in the competitive landscape of college sports media.

GIANTS Help Deliver Children’s Hospice In Western Sydney

The GIANTS have announced a significant achievement in their commitment to support vulnerable families in Western Sydney through the establishment of a new hospice, Mounties Care Cottage, which will provide essential end-of-life palliative and respite care for babies and children.

As the initiative gained momentum in 2023, thanks in part to former player, Callan Ward and his wife Ruby, who motivated the GIANTS Foundation to support Rio’s Legacy, a charity founded by Ryan and Karen Fowler to assist families facing the devastating reality of losing a child.

Commenting on the charity, Callan Ward, said: “This is an incredible cause. As a father of three, I believe children are at the heart of everything,”

“This project is vital not only for the children but also for the entire community.

“Imagining myself in the position of families with sick children is heartbreaking.

“However, with Mounties Care Cottage, those families will have access to the support they desperately need,” he said.

In addition, Ryan Fowler shared a poignant story regarding his son Rio who passed away due to a rare condition, saying: “Even in our final moments together, we felt safe and surrounded by love.”

“This inspiration has propelled our mission to create a hospice in Western Sydney,

“As we honour Rio’s legacy, Mounties Care Cottage will exist as a nurturing environment where children can live fully, rather than a place for farewells.

“Our heartfelt gratitude goes to the Mounties and the GIANTS, whose faith in our vision is paving the way for meaningful change in Western Sydney and beyond,” Fowler said.

General manager of the GIANTS Foundation, Nici Andronicus, added: “About 18 months ago, our players, members, fans, and donors rallied behind this vital project, and we are thrilled to see our efforts come to fruition.”

“This hospice exemplifies community spirit and the essential services we aim to provide in Western Sydney. We invite local businesses, sports teams, community groups, and families to join us in this meaningful endeavour,” Andronicus said.

Motivated by Rio’s legacy, the GIANTS set an ambitious goal of raising AUD$30 million for the hospice, leading to a collaboration with Mounties Group to launch a comprehensive awareness and fundraising campaign.

The partnership’s extensive member base of over 300,000 facilitated various fundraising events, including match days and the City2Surf, raising an impressive AUD$3.3 million.

On Tuesday, both the GIANTS and Rio’s Legacy gathered at the Westmead Children’s Hospital, the future site of Mounties Care Cottage, to mark a crucial funding milestone.

Notably, the Mounties Group increased its financial commitment to AUD$13 million, while the Minister for Health, Ryan Park, announced a significant AUD$20 million contribution from the Minns Government, securing the total funding required for the hospice’s construction.

The hospice is envisioned as a homelike setting where children will receive crucial care from respite and symptom management to end-of-life support.

This initiative is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the GIANTS, Mounties, and the broader community.

Both organisations are committed to continuing fundraising efforts for the project through the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation.

Importantly, the Mounties’ AUD$13 million contribution marks the largest single donation in the history of the foundation.

Looking ahead, the GIANTS plan to host numerous fundraising and engagement activities throughout 2025, including participation in the City2Surf in August.

They are also eager to enlist community support for this significant cause and ensure that Mounties Care Cottage becomes a treasured resource in Western Sydney.

Federal Government commits $15 million to bring NRLW to Cairns

The Australian Government has pledged AUD$15 million in funding for the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys’ proposed Community, Development, and High Performance Centre in Cairns, contingent upon their re-election this Saturday.

This commitment mirrors a similar pledge made by the LNP last month, indicating that both major political parties are vying for the project’s support.

Planned for West Barlow Park, the centre is set to serve as the permanent headquarters for the Cowboys’ NRLW team, as well as the Northern Pride.

Cowboys chairman, Lewis Ramsay, highlighted the significance of this commitment for both the club and female sport in North Queensland, particularly for local rugby league players.

He expressed gratitude to Minister for Sport, Anika Wells, and Labor candidate for Leichhardt, Matt Smith, for their support.

“Cairns and Far North Queensland has always been an enormously important region in the identity of the Cowboys and now it will also be home to our NRLW team,” Ramsay said.

The Cowboys’ head of NRLW & women’s elite pathways, Anita Creenaune, referred to the centre as a transformative initiative for women’s rugby league, aimed at inspiring the next generation of female athletes.

She highlighted Cairns’ contribution to Australia’s sporting talent pool, noting that the facility will enable local girls to train and compete at elite levels within their community.

Also expressing enthusiasm about the project, Cowboys legend, Johnathan Thurston, stated: “Sport can be a uniting force in communities and help build resilience in our young people,” he remarked.

Wells emphasised the importance of supporting women’s sport, stating that the funding will help establish Cairns’ first national women’s sporting team.

She pointed to the broader impact of the investment, which aims to foster female participation in sport from grassroots to elite levels.

Smith echoed these sentiments, asserting that the facility will not only promote female participation but also instil a sense of pride in the local community.

He reiterated the transformative potential of the project for sportswomen in Far North Queensland.

The AUD$15 million investment is expected to contribute to a total AUD$30 million world-class training and recovery facility exclusively tailored for the Cowboys NRLW team.

Additionally, it aims to create over 80 construction jobs and about 60 ongoing full-time roles while establishing Cairns as a key destination for women’s sport in Northern Queensland.
