More than 21,000 students in South Australia are now part of a fast-growing school mental health program backed by the Adelaide Crows Foundation and The Sebastian Foundation.

The initiative, known as Open Parachute, is helping schools improve student wellbeing, build emotional resilience, and support youth mental health through engaging, evidence-based lessons.

Commenting on the initiative, Reilly O’Brien, Adelaide Crows vice-captain, said: “It’s incredible to see the program reach 20,000 participants,”

“There is some amazing work being done in South Australian schools by the Crows Foundation and The Sebastian Foundation.

“It’s such a great program, something I wish I had access to when I was in school.

“It’s amazing to have that influence on kids, and being able to give back is such a privilege of being an AFL player,” he added.

What Is the Open Parachute Program?

Open Parachute is a school-based program that provides:

  • Short, age-appropriate video lessons
  • Guided by psychologist Dr Hayley Watson
  • Practical tools for stress, anxiety, and emotions
  • Content tailored for students, parents, and educators

These lessons aim to normalise conversations about mental health and give children skills they can use for life.

Rapid Growth Across South Australian Schools

In just two years, enrolment has grown by 340%, rising from 4,778 students to over 21,000 students across 53 schools and has been supported by:

  • Adelaide Crows Foundation
  • The Sebastian Foundation
  • Variety SA
  • Thomas Foods International

Why School Mental Health Programs Matter

With mental health issues on the rise among children and teens, school-based programs like Open Parachute are more important than ever.

The success of the Open Parachute program shows how collaboration between sports, education, and mental health experts can create lasting change.

As it continues to expand, it sets a powerful example for how schools across Australia can support student mental health through accessible, research-based programs.
