FIBA and NBA Target October 2027 Launch for New European Basketball League

The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and the NBA are targeting an October 2027 launch for a new, top-tier European club basketball league, according to FIBA secretary general, Andreas Zagklis.

The initiative is a move to inject North American commercial expertise and the recognisable NBA brand into the continent’s fragmented professional basketball landscape, aiming to create a more unified and financially viable system.

The October 2027 date is considered a “realistic target” and is carefully timed to follow the conclusion of the Men’s FIBA Basketball World Cup in Qatar in September 2027, providing an ideal springboard to launch a major new commercial program that Zagklis believes will shape the European club basketball landscape positively.

While the venture requires final approval from the respective boards of both the NBA and the FIBA Central Board, Zagklis stated he has “no doubts” the league will proceed.

The new league will operate under the European sports model and is designed to provide a clear pathway for “hundreds of clubs”.

Access to the new top-tier competition will be provided through the second-tier Basketball Champions League (BCL) and an end-of-season qualification tournament, ensuring the organisation avoids the criticism of a closed league structure, which has plagued the rival Euro league.

This new organisation will directly challenge the market dominance of Euroleague Commercial Assets (ECA), which currently operates the Euroleague and Eurocup.

Zagklis confirmed that conversations with ECA have been “good,” noting that coordination has improved recently, evidenced by eliminating the national team and Euroleague fixture overlap for the first time since 2002–2003.

However, a major concern for FIBA is ensuring clubs that do not transfer to the new venture can still secure revenue and compete at a high level.

By partnering with the NBA, FIBA aims to use the immense commercial power and global reach of the American league to consolidate and elevate the financial and competitive standing of European club basketball, effectively establishing a new, globally attractive sports asset in major European cities.
