Physical Disability Rugby League World Cup to Share Global Stage at 2026 Tournament

The upcoming IRL Rugby League World Cup 2026 will include the second Physical Disability Rugby League (PDRL) World Cup directly alongside the Men’s, Women’s, and Wheelchair tournaments.

Featuring national representation from Australia, England, and New Zealand, the tournament will be hosted at AIIMS Stadium in Cabramatta, where PDRL was established 16 years ago. The scheduling will culminate in a blockbuster final at Allianz Stadium on November 8, staged directly ahead of the Men’s and Women’s semi-finals, maximizing broadcast exposure and commercial reach.

Following the inaugural 2022 tournament in England, where reigning champions England defeated New Zealand at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, the 2026 event highlights rugby league’s expanding commitment to equity and diverse participation pathways.

Commenting on the significance of the dual-hosting model for elite athletes NSW PDRL vice-chair, Keith Povah , said: “Physical Disability Rugby League Australia is proud to host the Physical Disability Rugby League (PDRL) World Cup at AIIMS Stadium Cabramatta, where PDRL was born 16 years ago.”

“Playing on the same global stage as the Men’s, Women’s, and Wheelchair tournaments means everything to our playing group because it gives them an opportunity to showcase their skills alongside the whole rugby league family,” Povah said.

RFL national inclusion manager, Chris Godfrey, noted the developmental milestones achieved by the multi-format global showcase.

“The second PDRL World Cup marks a significant landmark for the continued progress of PDRL across the world.”

“Being placed on the same stage as the Men’s, Women’s and Wheelchair World Cups once more allows all to see that rugby league is a sport for them.

“The event will shine a spotlight on these fantastic athletes and spark the imagination of everyone to dream of what is possible for them,” Godfrey said. 

International alignment remains strong, with New Zealand securing its participation to reinforce the trans-Tasman rivalry.

Highlighting the collaborative spirit underpinning the event, NZPDRL chair, Sandra Hickey, shared: “Physical Disability Rugby League New Zealand is thrilled to be part of the second Physical Disability Rugby League World Cup in Sydney in October and November 2026.”

“Playing alongside the men’s, women’s and wheelchair competitions is a proud moment that celebrates the many forms of rugby league and the inclusive spirit of the game,” Hickey said.

The pool fixtures commence on October 30 when Australia faces England, followed by subsequent clashes leading up to the November 8 showdown.
