WNBL Opens 2026-27 Season with 40 Per Cent Attendance Surge and Record Digital Engagement

The Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) has recorded early commercial growth for the WNBL27 season, reporting a 40 per cent year-on-year increase in opening-week match attendance alongside record digital engagement metrics.

The opening round featured a sell-out launch fixture between expansion franchise Tasmania Jewels and the Geelong Venom at MyState Bank Arena, followed by the Sydney Flames attracting their largest home-opening crowd in club history at Quaycentre.

The attendance surge coincided with a 254 per cent increase in average weekly video views across official digital channels, rising from 1.6 million to 5.9 million impressions compared to the previous season’s opening window.

Demographic Expansion and Broadcast Distribution

A key driver of early audience growth is the league’s expanding international and high-performance talent pool, featuring prominent Australian Opals players alongside four Chinese national team stars.

The presence of international marquee talent has broadened domestic community engagement and bolstered Asian broadcast reach following the league’s distribution partnerships.

Highlighting the league’s focus on fan retention and cross-cultural community alignment, chief operations officer of the WNBL, Justin Nelson, said: “We’ve seen a fantastic response from fans to start the season, and to have attendance up 40 per cent is a huge credit to the fans and clubs.”

“The historic season opener in Tasmania was a special way to tip off the season, and what we saw in Sydney was another great example of the connection our clubs have made with their respective communities.

“What matters most is getting people through the doors, giving them a great experience and making sure they want to come back for more.

“We’re seeing that enthusiasm early this season, and we will keep building on it,” Nelson said.

Nelson added that demographic diversification remains central to the WNBL’s long-term commercial growth.

“Excitingly, we saw a huge rise in new fans, especially coming out to support the four Chinese national players and the high number of Opals playing this season.

“We want the WNBL to be a place where everyone feels welcome, whether they’ve followed basketball for years or are coming along to their first game. Seeing that interest grow across different communities is encouraging,” Nelson added.

The league continues its broadcast strategy for the 2026-27 season via free-to-air streaming on 9Now and direct-to-consumer coverage via ESPN on Disney+. Round 2 action commences Thursday, October 22, with the Southside Melbourne Flyers hosting the Tasmania Jewels at the State Basketball Centre.
