PNG Chiefs Launch Inaugural Logo and Supporter Jersey Ahead of NRL Entry in 2028

The PNG Chiefs have formally launched their official logo and supporter jersey at Santos Football Stadium in Port Moresby, a brand milestone ahead of the franchise’s entry into the NRL Telstra Premiership in 2028.

The unveiling event featured high-level diplomatic and political representatives from both the Papua New Guinean and Australian Governments alongside NRL executives.

The emblem, developed by a team of Papua New Guinean graphic designers, and the playing kit, featuring traditional artwork by local artist TABU, establish the visual identity for the NRL’s 19th franchise.

Representing a nation with more than 800 spoken languages, the central mark depicts a traditional chief incorporating regional cultural motifs from the Highlands, the Islands, Momase, and the Southern coastline.

Commenting on the strategic significance of finalising the club’s visual identity as foundational planning intensifies, PNG Chiefs CEO, Lorna McPherson, said: “Today marks one of the most significant milestones in the journey of the PNG Chiefs.”

“This is the first time that our club has its true, complete identity, a logo and jersey that our players, partners and fans can hold to as their own.

“The logo of the PNG Chiefs tells a story about Papua New Guinea, our people, what makes us strong and what makes us unique.

“The jersey of the PNG Chiefs is more than what players wear when they take to the field, it is a symbol of belonging, unity and the opportunity to represent millions of Papua New Guineans on the national stage.

“We know the responsibility that comes with establishing this club and we are incredibly proud to show our club to the world today,” McPherson said.

PNG Chiefs chair, Catherine Harris, emphasised the long-term governance and community foundations being established ahead of 2028.

“In reflecting the culture, character and pride of the nation, this identity belongs to more than the club – it belongs to the people of Papua New Guinea, and we want everyone involved with this great club to feel like they are a part of something truly special.”

“As we build towards 2028 and then beyond, we will look back on this defining moment as a pivotal step in creating a sustainable and successful club – helping to deliver a legacy that future generations of Papua New Guineans can be proud of,” Harris said.

Emblem Architecture and Symbolic Elements

The brand mark incorporates four distinct cultural elements reflecting governance, history, and national identity:

  • The Feather Headpiece: Modeled after ceremonial plumes, the five feathers denote strength, national pride, and earned authority, integrating the Southern Cross to align with the Papua New Guinea national flag.
  • The Cassowary Bone: Derived from warrior heritage, the cassowary bone symbolizes physical power, courage, and athletic resilience.
  • The Face: Contoured to mirror the geographical map of Papua New Guinea, the face features ceremonial red body paint to signify national unity.
  • The Kina Shells: Positioned to represent historic wealth, trade, and economic prestige spanning coastal, island, and highland provinces.

Roster Integration and Commercial Partnership Portfolio

Papua New Guinea Kumuls international stars and 2028 PNG Chiefs development squad members Gairo Voro, Morea Morea, and Finley Glare modeled the inaugural kit at the launch.

The official supporter jersey features a tier-one corporate sponsorship portfolio for 2028 and beyond, including Principal Partner Bank South Pacific (BSP), PNG LNG, Coca-Cola, Nambawan Super, SP Lager, Struddys, Taylor Pacific, Toyota (trading as Ela Motors), and K92 Mining.

International retail distribution will encompass domestic licensed storefronts across Papua New Guinea alongside global e-commerce and Australian retail channels.
