The WNBL has announced a major leadership restructure ahead of the 2026/27 season, appointing experienced administrator Justin Nelson as chief WNBL operations officer and Australian basketball icon Lauren Jackson as chief strategy and basketball partnerships officer.

The move transitions into its second year under a new ownership group, aiming to solidify its operational framework and global commercial standing.

The appointments reflect a strategic pivot by the NBL Group to professionalise the league’s delivery while leveraging elite sporting expertise to bridge the gap between grassroots pathways and international commercial opportunities.

Operational Excellence and League Growth

In his new capacity, Justin Nelson will oversee the daily running of the competition, with a specific mandate to improve the experience for commercial partners, players, and fans. Nelson brings over 30 years of media and sports experience, notably spearheading the professionalisation of New Zealand’s basketball league, where he secured pay parity and landmark broadcast deals.

Commenting on his appointment, Nelson, said: “The WNBL is an incredibly special and thriving league that is really on the cusp of exploding,”

“We’ve expanded with a ninth team this season… now we’re focused on the WNBL meaning more to more people,” Nelson said.

Strategic Partnerships and Talent Pathways

Lauren Jackson, a five-time Olympian and arguably Australia’s greatest basketball export, will focus on the league’s long-term evolution.

Her role as chief strategy and basketball partnerships officer is designed to “supercharge” the league’s national cut-through and international visibility.

Expressing her enthusiasm, Jackson, shared: “I’ve built my professional off-court career through connecting people and creating opportunities.”

“We have the best talent in the world and being a part of taking this league to the next level is something I’m incredibly proud of,” Jackson said.

Jackson’s focus will include:

  • On-Court Product Evolution: Enhancing the quality and entertainment value of the competition.
  • Talent Pathways: Identifying and accelerating the next generation of elite Australian athletes.
  • International Opportunities: Developing strategic partnerships with global leagues and sponsors.

Commercial and Strategic Impact

The WNBL Ownership Group emphasised that combining Nelson’s deep operational expertise with Jackson’s global brand and strategic insights creates a “formidable” leadership team.

The league is currently focused on an aggressive growth strategy following a successful first season under new management, which saw increased investment in digital platforms and club support.
