Valkyries Announce Groundbreaking Broadcast Deal with CBS

The Golden State Valkyries, WNBA’s newest team, signed a media rights deal making CBS Bay Area the franchise’s first local broadcasting partner.

Team president, Jess Smith, said: “Everything the Valkyries have done has been so intentional.”

“As we went to market, there were a lot of things in mind for us. First, reach.

“As fans are tuning into what’s potentially their first WNBA game, we want to really think through what that experience is like.

“CBS came to the forefront. Through and through, they’re incredibly passionate just about what this is and the opportunity to build with us,” he said.

Valkyries games will be broadcast on KPIX and KPYX in the Bay Area, and the stations will also carry Valkyries pregame and postgame shows, as well as studio analysis at halftime.

While financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, the Valkyries will join the Aces, Fever, Liberty and Wings as the only known WNBA teams receiving local rights fees.

The Valkyries front office expects the broadcast to reach four million homes and 11 million people across Northern California.
