Brydens Lawyers have directed the Sydney Kings to remove it’s name from NBL courts, until the league takes action over potentially dangerous sponsorship on-court decals.

The court decal controversy has overshadowed the start of the 2021 NBL season, with players raising concerns after slipping on and near the decals.

In a statement, Brydens Lawyers principal, Lee Hagipantelis, said the situation is a serious concern.

“I am alarmed by reports of players in the NBL expressing concern as to the presence of decals on the court and that some may be adding to the risk of injury,” Hagipantelis said.

“As the principal of Brydens Lawyers, a firm that has practised almost exclusively in the area of personal injury litigation for over 40 years, I cannot, in good conscience, permit my firm to be engaged in any activity where a risk of foreseeable injury has been identified and the resolution of that risk is obvious,” he said.

The Australian Basketball Players’ Association has requested action from the league after multiple complaints and incidents involving players.

However, the NBL has thus far declined to remove the decals, saying they meet FIBA international standards.

ESPN has reported penalties may be issued for public criticism made about the league and its slippery decals and officiating.

As it stands, no fines have been issued.

The league’s statements and decal issues have drawn criticism from Australian basketball legend Andrew Bogut.

“The NBL has addressed the decal issue by informing clubs all players and club officials will be FINED if they make any more comments about falling on decals,” Bogut tweeted.

In a statement from the NBL, they have said the Brydens Lawyers decal situation “is a matter between the Kings and their sponsor”.
