Rugby Canada has announced a partnership with PlayHQ, the global competition management leader, to modernise the sport’s digital infrastructure across the country.
The agreement marks PlayHQ’s first foray into the sport of rugby and its inaugural major partnership in the North American market, following its dominant success in Australia, New Zealand, and the UK.
The move will see Rugby Canada’s 10 provincial unions and over 30,000 registered participants migrate to a single, unified cloud-based platform ahead of the 2026 season.
The transition is designed to eliminate the “disconnected data” typically found in federated sporting structures, replacing legacy systems with a modern mobile app and automated administrative workflows.
Commenting on the partnership, CEO of PlayHQ, Tim MacKinnon, said: “Managing provinces within a federated structure requires technology that balances local control with national coordination.”
“Our platform unites provincial administrators, clubs, and national governance in one ecosystem, eliminating duplicate systems and turning disconnected data into actionable insights,” MacKinnon said.
PlayHQ platform provides Rugby Canada with a program for real-time analytics, administrators will be able to track talent pathways, monitor player retention patterns, and access automated compliance dashboards for critical safety protocols, including Blue Cards (concussion tracking), incident reporting, and sanctioning.
Emphasising the benefit to the game’s volunteers, managing director of national sport organisation services at Rugby Canada, Ashley Lewis, added: “PlayHQ simplifies administration and strengthens compliance, allowing clubs to spend less time managing systems and more time building strong, welcoming rugby communities.”
PlayHQ has already processed more than USD1 billion in payments and supported over 11 million registrations globally for organisations such as the AFL, Cricket Australia, and Netball Australia.
Key Features of the Rugby Canada x PlayHQ Migration:
The implementation includes comprehensive onboarding for the 10 Provincial Union members throughout 2025, ensuring the system is fully operational for the 2026 kick-off. By establishing this digital foundation, Rugby Canada is positioning itself to meet the objectives of its National Growth Plan and secure a more sustainable future for the grassroots game from coast to coast.
