Paralympics Australia Announces New President

Paralympics Australia has announced the appointment of Grant Mizens OAM PLY as its new president, succeeding Alison Creagh AM CSC, who has stepped down from the position.

Mr. Mizens, a three-time Paralympian and a notable advocate for Para-sport, brings a big experience and enthusiasm to the leadership role. Having joined the board of Paralympics Australia in 2020, he was elevated to the role of vice president in 2023.

His ascension to the presidency marks a pivotal period for Paralympics Australia (PA), particularly as the organisation gears up for the Milano Cortina 2026, Los Angeles 2028, and the home Paralympic Games in Brisbane in 2032.

Mizens becomes the 10th President in PA’s history since its inception in 1990 and follows in the footsteps of Ron Finneran, a Winter Paralympian who held the position in 1993, making Mizens the second Paralympian to assume this prestigious role.

In addition to his noteworthy accomplishments within the Paralympic Movement as an athlete, coach, and administrator, Mr. Mizens boasts a strong background in commercial operations acquired through his successful career in wealth management.

“I am deeply honoured to take on this role and I look forward to building on the incredible legacy left by Alison. She has been such a strong advocate for the Paralympic Movement and for me, personally,” Mr Mizens stated.

As momentum for the Paralympic Movement continues to build, he expressed excitement about expanding the platform established to ensure that Australia’s Para-athletes, teams, and the PA board and staff lead the way in promoting inclusion and increasing opportunities for the Paralympic Movement throughout the country.

Under Ms. Creagh’s stewardship, Paralympics Australia achieved notable successes, including leading a strong contingent to the upcoming Paris 2024 Paralympic Games and securing unprecedented Federal Government funding as part of the Para System Uplift initiative, aimed at eliminating barriers for Para-athletes within Australia’s high-performance sports system.

Ms. Creagh has recently taken on a position within the Oceania Paralympic Committee Board and will maintain her involvement with various national roles in both the sporting and community sectors.

The Paralympics Australia Board has expressed its appreciation for Ms. Creagh’s exemplary service over the past three years and has welcomed Mr. Mizens with unanimous backing as he embarks on this new chapter for the organisation.
