South Melbourne Football Club has significantly boosted its governance and organisational capability by appointing Chris Karagounis, Managing Partner of executive search and leadership advisory firm ALEX KAAR, to its board of directors.

The board addition arrives as the historic Victorian club aggressively pursues its long-held commercial and sporting ambitions to secure admission into the national A-League competition, while building deeper bridges within Melbourne’s corporate and multicultural communities.

As one of the most storied institutions in Australian football, South Melbourne continues to professionalise its administrative structure to meet the stringent governance and commercial criteria required for top-flight expansion.

The appointment of an experienced corporate advisor with deep expertise in executive search, leadership development, and board effectiveness provides the club with critical strategic oversight as it scales its operations for future elite competition.

Welcoming the appointment, co-president, Bill Papastergiadis OAM, underscored the vital leadership capabilities Karagounis brings to the board table during a pivotal phase of institutional growth.

“Chris brings deep experience in leadership, building high-performance teams, and uniting people behind a common purpose.”

“That experience will be invaluable as we strengthen the Club and build for an ambitious future,” Papastergiadis stated.

Chris Karagounis reflected on the profound personal and cultural significance of joining the organisation, noting the enduring heritage linking his family to the club’s rich history, while doubling down on the board’s unwavering commitment to elite national expansion.

“South Melbourne is one of the great clubs of Australian football, built on a proud history and a deep connection to the Greek community.”

“For me, that connection is personal. Football connects my youngest son Evan and me to our heritage, and joining the Board is a genuine privilege.

“Our ambition is equally clear: South Melbourne belongs at the highest level of Australian football. We want to compete in the A-League – and we won’t stop pushing until we get there,” Karagounis declared.

The board renewal reflects a concerted effort by South Melbourne’s leadership to align its commercial foundation with its on-field heritage.
