The National Football League has announced the appointment of Brian Flinn as Senior Vice President, Global Flag Football, a newly created senior leadership role designed to capitalise on the sport’s rapid international expansion.

Based in New York, Flinn will lead the league’s global strategy and execution, overseeing everything from grassroots youth participation to the development of professional pathways as the sport prepares for its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Games.

Flinn joins the organisation with over 30 years of experience across sports, entertainment, and media. Most recently, he served as chief operating officer of the Pro Padel League, where he successfully drove a tenfold increase in the competition’s valuation within a single year. His extensive resume also includes tenures as Chief Marketing and Communications Officer at WWE and senior leadership roles at the NBA and the New York Knicks.

Reflecting on his new role, Flinn noted that flag football has a unique ability to engage new audiences and create global pathways.

“The sport has a unique ability to engage new audiences, create global pathways, and inspire the next generation of athletes.”

“I am looking forward to working with the league’s leadership and partners around the world to continue to fuel the game’s rapid growth and build a sustainable, impactful future for flag football,

“It is an honor to join the NFL at such a transformative time for flag football,” Flinn said.

NFL Executive vice president of Football Operations, Troy Vincent Sr., emphasised that Flinn’s leadership comes at a pivotal moment for the game.

“Flag football is experiencing extraordinary growth across the globe, from youth participation to elite international competition,” Vincent Sr said.

The appointment coincides with a period of unprecedented participation growth, with approximately 20 million players worldwide and a 50 per cent increase in US youth participation since 2020. The sport is also making significant gains in formal education, with the NCAA recently approving flag football for its Emerging Sports for Women program.

In addition, the NFL is also partnering with TMRW Sports to develop a professional flag football league for both men and women.

This initiative is backed by an influential investor pool, including NFL clubs and strategic institutional investors, further professionalising a sport that is now offered at the high school level in 39 US states.
