The Movistar Road cycling team has secured Quantum Pacific Management as a fresh investment acquiring a 43% stake in the outfit’s parent company Abarca Sports.
Quantum joins Abarca Sports founders Eusebio Unzué and Francisco Fernández Maestre as shareholders of sports organisation, but there has not been any financial terms for the investment that have been disclosed at the moment.
Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS), a Quantum-affiliated company, signs sponsorship deal with Abarca, to provide financial and logistical support to team, the EPS logo will appear on lower half of all men’s and women’s team jerseys
Commenting on the new investment, Quantum representative, Andri Smilas, said: “The Movistar Team has one of the longest and most successful histories in world cycling, and we are very excited to be part of their future plans.”
“Supporting the development of such a dynamic sport, from the grassroots to the elite level of professional cycling, in both the men’s and women’s disciplines, aligns with our business, social, and environmental objectives.
“We look forward to working alongside the many leading players in the industry who are part of this team,” Smilas said.
Founder of Abarca Sports, Unzué, added: “I am very pleased that such an important international group like Quantum has decided to invest in cycling,”
“Their entry into the capital of Abarca Sports strengthens us as a team and places us in a more solid position to face the future.
“This partnership will allow Movistar Team to enhance our presence at the highest level of cycling and explore new opportunities to become increasingly relevant to our sponsors and fans,” he said.
This is the first cycling investment made by Israel-based group Quantum, which is led by billionaire Idan Ofer.
The firm also holds investments in several soccer clubs, including a 28 per cent stake in LaLiga outfit Atlético Madrid.
As for the Movistar team, this deal will give the cycling outfit a significant financial boost.
The addition of Quantum comes after Movistar’s parent company Telefónica extended its main sponsorship last December, securing naming rights to the Spanish cycling team until 2029.
