Liberty unveil plans for waterfront practice facility

Brooklyn Sports and Entertainment has unveiled its intentions to construct a state-of-the-art 75,000-square-foot practice facility for the New York Liberty, as reported by Tania Ganguli of the New York Times.

This planned venue will be situated in the Greenpoint neighbourhood of Brooklyn, taking advantage of prime waterfront space along Newtown Creek, notably on what is currently an unoccupied lot.

The ownership group of the Liberty has committed to fully fund this ambitious project, with an estimated construction cost of approximately $80 million (AUD$127 million).

The facility promises to offer a cutting-edge environment for athletes, featuring two indoor courts equipped with advanced remote cameras and data tracking technology.

Additionally, players will benefit from a recovery suite and a two-storey strength training area specifically designed to enhance their performance and well-being.

Beyond athletic training, the facility is set to feature rooftop dining areas that provide stunning views of Manhattan.

Innovations such as a hair, makeup, and nail studio will also be included, as well as individual pods that replace traditional lockers; these pods will boast day beds, wardrobes, and vanities to cater to the players’ needs.

Liberty co-owner Clara Wu Tsai explained that the organisation had explored options for creating spaces within the Brooklyn Nets’ facility in Industry City, however, the decision ultimately favoured a standalone location, which she views as an essential investment to demonstrate long-term commitment to the players, fans, and the surrounding community.

Also of note is the team’s intent to establish a Liberty-themed coffee shop open to the public on the premises, along with a dedicated team store providing exclusive merchandise.

Renowned architectural firm Populous has been tasked with designing the facility, ensuring that each player’s locker is styled as an individual suite.

These suites will incorporate a seven-foot-long day bed, a full-size wardrobe, and a vanity to foster a comfortable and practical environment for the athletes.

It’s worth noting that construction will not commence for several months, with the facility projected to open in approximately two years.

Liberty stars such as Sabrina Ionescu, Jonquel Jones, and Breanna Stewart have collaborated with Populous to contribute insights into the designs, underscoring the team’s commitment to creating a space tailored to the needs of its athletes.
