La Liga, Relevent And Uninterrupted Launch Athlete-Only Esports Tournament
The La Liga, Spanish soccer’s top-flight, have partnered with Relevent Sports and Uninterrupted to launch an athlete-only esports FIFA 20 tournament.
The competition, ‘Kick COVID’, is set to raise funds to support the fight against the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic, featuring 16 sporting stars from the NFL, NBA, La Liga, and the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).
The tournament will be live streamed on Twitch and other social media channels, with the money raised during the tournament going towards the Feeding America food bank charity.
Relevent Sports chief executive, Daniel Sillman, said the tournament is a great way to raise money for an important and essential cause.
“This partnership between Uninterrupted, La Liga North America and the Women’s International Champions Cup allows us to continue promoting international football, while raising money for such an important and essential cause,” Sillman said.
“We continue to build the global WICC platform and move the game forward by bringing the top clubs and players from Europe closer to North American fans,” he said.
Uninterrupted co-owner, Maverick Carter, said this is a great chance for athletes to connect with players and fans around the world during the time of self-isolation and lockdowns.
“This moment we are living has proven just how connected we all are, and our love of sports, transcends leagues and teams and countries,” Carter said.
“This tournament is a unique opportunity for the NBA and NFL athletes we work so closely with to connect with players and fans from across the world, while also doing good here at home, and for our audience to see the biggest names in Spanish football in a whole new light,” he said.
Some of the athletes competing in the FIFA 20 tournament include DeAndre Hopkins and Damarious Randall from the NFL, Willy Hernangomez, Clint Capela and John Collins from the NBA, US national women’s soccer player Allie Long and Alvaro Morata from Atletico Madrid in the La Liga.
La Liga North America chief executive, Boris Gartner, said this is a great chance for international athletes and leagues to further expand their reach around the globe.
“La Liga has always been an engine for positive change, and with this initiative we are looking to bring together the best athletes from around the world, to compete, inspire and help during an unprecedented period of difficulty and uncertainty,” Gartner said.
“We all share a passion for storytelling through sports and couldn’t be more thrilled to engage with both existing and new fans in North America,” he said.
