The Ivy League will not hold a spring sports season this year, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact the US college sport landscape.

The league, comprised of Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Cornell Brown, Dartmouth, and the University of Pennsylvania, decided to cancel all competition and postseason games.

In a joint statement, the universities’ presidents explained their decision.

“While we would like nothing better than to deliver a complete season of competition, these are the necessary decisions for the Ivy League in the face of the health concerns posed by the ongoing and dangerous pandemic,” the universities said in the joint statement.

“In the Ivy League, these [public health] measures must apply equally to our athletics programs along with other academic and co-curricular activities,” they said.

This decision may influence other leagues in the country, with the Ivy League the first Division 1 conference to announce the cancellation of sports in their autumn season last year.

Most college and professional teams in the US, however, are continuing to play with limited or no spectators.

The cancellation of this upcoming spring season means the Ivy League will go for over a year without competitive sports.

Officials will monitor the situation in the meantime and will make a decision, potentially enabling local competitions to take place when deemed safe.
