The Essendon Football Club has announced a total fundraising tally of $83,033.80 from its annual Challenge game, reinforcing a two-decade community partnership dedicated to supporting children and families facing childhood cancer.
Held during Round 19 at Marvel Stadium against the GWS Giants, the marquee fixture generated vital financial backing through ticketing donations, corporate partner contributions, and a player match-worn Guernsey auction that amassed more than $32,000. Significant financial support was also driven by key corporate partners including Yakult, alongside contributions from the AFL Players Association and passionate club supporters across the wider community.
Kyle Langford highlighted the profound personal connections forged between the players and participating families over the years.
“One of the absolute joys of playing for this Club is to make a meaningful impact on the lives of these children and their families.”
“We’re fortunate to play in a lot of special games and this sits right at the very top. So many of our players over the years have established beautiful connections with these families through the partnership that continue to endure,” Langford said.
Emphasising the enduring commercial and cultural identity of the initiative, Essendon Football Club CEO, Tim Roberts, added: “Our partnership with Challenge has become an essential piece of the Club’s identity.”
“We hold so much pride in what we’ve been able to achieve over the two decades dating back to Rama’s fight.”
Praising the collaborative success of the matchday activations, Challenge CEO, David Rogers, noted: “While the auction results and the total funds raised are massive for us going forward in supporting the kids, what’s really about is the collaboration, the connection, and the experiences that the families will be able to hold onto.”
This year’s iteration was marked by a powerful strategic evolution, featuring the launch of the 2026 Challenge Jumper which honoured the legacy of former Bomber Adam Ramanauskas, whose pioneering cancer battles inspired Essendon’s original Call to Arms campaign.
In a first for the organisation, player numbers were transitioned from traditional white to Challenge yellow to visually spotlight the fight against childhood cancer, with every single match-worn and player-issued guernsey completely selling out at auction.
Essendon’s AFL playing group also demonstrated its ongoing commitment by donating the entirety of its $10,000 AFLPA player charity grant directly to the cause.
