Blundstone Tasmania Academy and UTAS Launch National-First Sport Degree Pathway

The Blundstone Tasmania Academy of Leadership and Sport (TALS) has solidified a nation-leading partnership with the University of Tasmania (UTAS) to accelerate the professional development of the state’s sports administrators.

This collaboration creates a first-of-its-kind 2.5-year degree pathway, allowing TALS graduates to receive 1.5 years of credit toward a Bachelor of Business. The initiative is a joint effort between the Tasmania Football Club, Tasmania JackJumpers, Hobart Hurricanes, and Netball Tasmania, aimed at addressing workforce growth within the sports and entertainment industry.

Highlighting the power of combining elite sport with tertiary education to retain local talent, Tasmania’s Head of Education and Impact, Jesse O’Hara, said: “We are thrilled to be able to take the next step with the TALS program and provide the tertiary education opportunity to our graduates in partnership with UTAS,”

“We know the power of combining sport and education and the opportunities that can create for our students, this is evidenced already and we expect this to continue to increase in impact as the Tasmanian sports industry continues to grow,” O’Hara said.

University of Tasmania Deputy vice-chancellor, Kate Huntington, added: “As a result of the TALS partnership, we have students in Business, Education, and Sport and Exercise Science courses at our campuses across the state and we look forward to opening up educational pathways for many more Tasmanians in the future.”

Established in 2025, the TALS program has already seen 11 students from its inaugural cohort transition into the UTAS degree.

Currently, over 85 students are enrolled across Launceston and Hobart, pursuing “off-field” career paths through integrated industry placements.

This model ensures that students gain practical experience within professional sporting organisations while completing their studies, making the degree pathway faster, more efficient, and highly engaging for future executives.

The partnership acts as a critical pillar for the Tasmanian sports economy, ensuring a steady pipeline of skilled professionals to manage the state’s expanding sporting landscape. By keeping young talent on the island and attracting new students, the collaboration strengthens the link between professional clubs and educational institutions.

Partners including TasTAFE, Netball Tasmania, and the JackJumpers have lauded the collective impact of the program, noting that the industry is “stronger and more impactful when working together.”
