Angus Crichton Formalises Rugby Australia Switch for 2027 World Cup Bid

Rugby Australia has formalised announced cross-code coup, securing the signature of Sydney Roosters and Kangaroos star Angus Crichton on a two-year contract

The deal, announced on only today, 21 January 2026, will see the 29-year-old backrower depart the NRL at the conclusion of the 2026 season to join the NSW Waratahs and pursue a dream of representing the Wallabies at the 2027 Rugby World Cup on home soil.

The agreement marks a “full circle” moment for the Temora-born athlete, who was a standout for The Scots College and the Australian Schoolboys in 2014 before pivotting to rugby league.

While Crichton has established himself as one of the premier second-rowers in the NRL, winning premierships, State of Origin shields, and international caps, reports suggest the Waratahs intend to deploy him as a midfield option. This transition mirrors the successful blueprints of previous converts such as Sonny Bill Williams and Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii.

Commenting on his decision, Crichton, said: “I’ve always been open to the different path,” Crichton noted previously of a potential return to the 15-man code. “I haven’t played the sport in 10 years, so I’d be interested to see where I stack up.”

Strategic Implications for the Wallabies

The acquisition highlights Rugby Australia’s high-performance program heading into the 2027 global showpiece. Crichton becomes the fourth high-profile Rooster to defect to rugby union in recent seasons, following Suaalii, Joey Manu, and Mark Nawaqanitawase. The latter has reportedly signed a USD1 million-a-season (AUD1.4 million) deal in Japan for 2027, which allows him to remain eligible for Wallabies selection under current criteria.

For the Sydney Roosters, Crichton’s departure after the 2026 season creates a significant void in their roster. However, the organisation has already begun its succession planning, reportedly eyeing Manly’s Reuben Garrick as a versatile replacement. Trent Robinson’s side will retain Crichton’s services for the duration of the 2026 campaign, during which he is expected to remain a vital cog in their premiership aspirations.

By securing a recognisable elite athlete with a proven “big game” temperament, Rugby Australia is banking on Crichton’s physicality and ball-playing ability to provide the Wallabies with a distinct edge in the midfield.

His familiarity with the Waratahs’ development system and his deep-rooted connections within the rugby community are expected to accelerate his reintegration into the code ahead of the 2027 Super Rugby Pacific season.
