Lionel Messi Announces International Retirement Following 2026 World Cup Campaign

Global football icon Lionel Messi has officially announced his retirement from international competition following Argentina’s campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 39-year-old forward, who remains contracted with Major League Soccer club Inter Miami through the conclusion of the 2028 season, released his retirement statement on social media, after Argentina’s appearance in the World Cup final against Spain.

Messi posted on his social media the announcement of his retirement from the national team.

The decision follows the recent passing of his father and longtime confidant, Jorge Messi, at the age of 68, profoundly influencing the veteran captain’s final evaluation of his storied international career.

As Argentina’s all-time leading goalscorer and most-capped player, Messi leaves behind an unmatched legacy encompassing 125 goals across 207 international appearances, alongside a World Cup triumph in Qatar in 2022.

While his commercial and playing commitments will continue within the club ecosystem, anchored by his multiple partnership with Inter Miami, his departure from the national setup marks a transition for sports marketers and international broadcasting partners who have leveraged his global marketability for two decades.

Reflecting deeply on the timing of his exit, Messi shared a poignant statement with supporters regarding his departure from the Albiceleste.

“After this time that has passed since the final, thinking about it a lot, I want to inform everyone that I am retiring from the National Team.”

“Today, after what happened with my dad, I am even more convinced than before,” Messi shared.

Addressing the emotional toll and the reality of elite sporting longevity, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner elaborated on the closure of his international chapter.

“Time is running short, chapters come to a close, and this is one that hurts me deeply.”

“I love, I have loved, and will always love to be part of the national team.

“I have given it my all, I have nothing left to give, and besides, there are really great young players coming through behind me who deserve their chance,” he further shared.

The evolution of the national team now pivots toward nurturing emerging talent, ensuring the commercial and athletic pipeline remains robust.

Although the loss of international football’s most recognisable figure presents a short-term promotional challenge for South American governing bodies, Messi’s enduring presence in Major League Soccer guarantees that his viability and brand equity will continue to drive revenue through 2028.
