36ers and BHP combine in Coober Pedy

The Adelaide 36ers recently visited Coober Pedy. Facilitated by a partnership with BHP Copper SA, marked a milestone as it was the first foray into Coober Pedy, following four previous trips to Roxby Downs in the past year.

Commenting on the activity, general manager of Social Impact and Community for the Adelaide 36ers, Ross Wait, said: “It has been a great partnership with BHP that has taken the Adelaide 36ers to both Roxby Downs and Coober Pedy in recent times.”

“We know that regional and remote communities often miss out on opportunities to engage with professional sporting organisations, so we thank BHP for facilitating this invaluable experience for both the community and the Adelaide 36ers.

“Our players and staff derive as much benefit from these visits as the local community does.

“We truly treasure the stories we encounter and the connections we forge,” Wait commented.

BHP Copper SA, an important player in South Australia’s mining sector, has established deep ties with the communities in which it operates, including Coober Pedy.

The visit involved approximately 120 children from Reception to Year 10 at Coober Pedy Area School, who participated in three skill sessions held in the school gymnasium.

Following these sessions, a free community clinic was hosted at the newly upgraded outdoor courts located at the intersection of Giles and Hocking Streets.

With 36ers centre Ben Griscti in attendance, the atmosphere was electrifying as he demonstrated his impressive skills, including several spectacular slam dunks, much to the delight of the children.

BHP Copper SA maintains a robust operational presence in the region, with underground mines located at Olympic Dam, Prominent Hill, and Carrapateena, all feeding into a centralised smelter and refinery at Olympic Dam.

Additionally, an exploration project at Oak Dam underscores BHP’s ongoing commitment to the area.
