he Washington NFL club have decided to retire the controversial ‘Redskins’ name and logo, ten days after the franchise announced they would review the team’s name.

The move comes following years of criticism for the branding, which has long been considered offensive to Native Americans, but recently was intensified amid social justice protests across the U.S.

The intensifying of calls for the club to be renamed was highlighted by the Washington franchises’ sponsors, including FedEx, Nike and Pepsi, who said they would officially end their support of the club if the name was not changed.

The club has yet to decide on a replacement name and logo, but announced the team owner, Dan Snyder, and coach Ron Rivera, were considering new names and branding options for the team.

“As part of this process, we want to keep our sponsors, fans and community apprised of our thinking as we go forward,” the Washington NFL club said in a statement, discussing the early stages of their review of the team’s name.

“Today, we are announcing we will be retiring the Redskins name and logo upon completion of this review.

“Dan Snyder and coach Rivera are working closely to develop a new name and design approach that will enhance the standing of our proud, tradition rich franchise and inspire our sponsors, fans and community for the next 100 years,” the franchise said.

Some potential options for the new team name that have been gaining traction in the public eye are the Washington Warriors, the Washington Senators, and the Washington Red Tails.

The social justice group behind the major push to change the Washington Redskins name, ‘Change the Mascot’, have also reportedly set their sights on other U.S. sporting franchises with names that also invoke Native American stereotypes.

These include the Atlanta Braves, Chicago Blackhawks, the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Cleveland Indians.

The Cleveland Indians announced, hours after the Redskins, they would also be conducting a comprehensive review of their name and branding.
