Victorian Government Mandates COVID-19 Vaccines For Professional Sport

The Victorian Government has announced all authorised workers in sport in Victoria must receive at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine within a fortnight to continue working.

The authorised workers include: “professional or high-performance sportspersons, workers that support the safe running of that person’s professional sport, and public broadcast personnel necessary for broadcasting the professional sport.”

With the new mandates, these workers must show proof of at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine prior to 15 October, and proof of full vaccination by 26 November.

The mandates will cover all professional sporting organisations and leagues across the state, with Victorian Premier, Daniel Andrews saying the mandate is the best option for Victoria amid surging COVID-19 case numbers and a sixth lockdown.

“By Friday 15 October, every single authorised worker that is on that authorised worker list, whether they be in Melbourne or in regional Victoria, will need to have had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine,” Andrews said.

“That is if they want to continue working.

“This is about going the extra mile to protect the roadmap to opening, to protect 26 October, or perhaps even a few days earlier, and to make sure we can open.

“So I expect there’ll be a conversation, for instance, with the AFL, where the AFL will be informed on behalf of all their clubs, that if you want to go back to pre-season training in a month’s time, you will need to be double-vaxxed as an authorised worker, even when after we get to 80% (of Victorians vaccinated) and the authorisations are no longer there,” he said.

Most sporting leagues throughout the country have not officially mandated COVID-19 vaccinations for all athletes, however have strongly encouraged athletes and staff to be fully vaccinated, with Racing Victoria going as far as issuing a mandate for industry-wide vaccination.
