The Victorian Government has announced an expansion of ‘Change Our Game’, a program that connects women to careers within the sports broadcasting industry.
Since its inception in 2020, Change Our Game has connected women to careers within sports media all across Victoria, from print media, to producing, interviewing and podcasts. Through mentoring, knowledge-sharing, and resource provision, the program looks to address the gender disparity in the sports broadcasting industry.
Nurturing and creating avenues for women to contribute to the national sports media landscape, and paving the way for other girls to follow, is critical to addressing the gender disparity in sports media. A recent report from The Labor Government, The Conversation of Sport: Representation of Women in Sports News Coverage, highlighted the underrepresentation of women in sports media, revealing that women account for only 27% of sports bylines and are 62% more likely than male journalists to cover women’s sports.
