Sydney Sixers Appoint James Hopes as Head Coach

The Sydney Sixers have announced the appointment of James Hopes as their new head coach on a two-year contract.

The move marks a significant transition for the BBL’s most consistent franchise, as Hopes takes on his first senior head coaching role following an extensive career as an elite assistant on the global T20 circuit.

The appointment is a mechanical necessity for Cricket NSW, which is seeking a “different coaching style” to modernise its pathway systems and elevate a side that has reached eight grand finals but finished as runners-up last summer.

Hopes replaces the highly-decorated Greg Shipperd, who was removed in January as part of a broader structural overhaul that also saw Brad Haddin installed as coach of the NSW Blues.

Describing Hopes as an “exceptional cricket mind” whose international franchise experience makes him an ideal fit, Sixers general manager, Rachel Haynes, said: “James has a proven track record of developing players and building high‑performing environments.”

The Mandate: Evolution and Youth Integration

The decision to pivot from Shipperd to Hopes reflects a desire by Cricket NSW CEO, Lee Germon, to expose a transitioning roster to a fresh perspective. Germon noted earlier this year that the aim is to “go up another level” and ensure young talent is exposed to coaching styles that can “really bring out the best in them.”

Hopes, a former Australian all-rounder who played 84 ODIs and 12 T20Is, was renowned as a player for his consistency and leadership, famously captaining Queensland to Sheffield Shield and One-Day Cup titles. He now inherits a Sixers squad that has qualified for the finals in 12 of the league’s 15 seasons.

Commenting on his transition as head coach, Hopes, shared: “I’m incredibly honoured to join the Sydney Sixers, a club with a proud history and a strong identity built on consistency,”

“I’m excited to work with a talented playing group and contribute to the next phase of the Sixers’ success,” Hopes said.

A Proven Technical Specialist

Hopes has built a formidable reputation as a bowling specialist and tactical mind across several major global leagues.

His coaching resume includes:

  • IPL: Current bowling coach for the Punjab Kings and formerly with the Delhi Capitals.
  • Major League Cricket (MLC): Bowling coach for the Washington Freedom.
  • Big Bash League: Previous roles with the Brisbane Heat and Hobart Hurricanes.
  • State System: Extensive coaching experience with both Queensland and Tasmania.
