pain’s Minister of Consumer Affairs, Alberto Garzón, has addressed all 25 La Liga presidents in a letter, calling for an end to gambling sponsorships at the end of this season.

Currently, seven teams in the top-flight Spanish league have shirt sponsorship deals with gambling companies.

They consist of: Alavés (Betway), Cádiz (Dafabet), Granada (Winamax), Levante (Betway), Real Betis (Betway), Sevilla (MarathonBet) and Valencia (Bwin).

In the second tier, Girona and Leganés have respective principal partnerships with MarathonBet and Betway.

La Liga also has its own tie-up with Sportium, which serves as the league’s official sportsbook.

Real Madrid has Codere as its Spanish market betting operator but also has a deal with Kok Sports in Asia that may not be impacted by the decree if Spain follows the Italian model in allowing betting sponsorships outside the domestic territory.

Barcelona’s official betting partner is 1XBET, in a global deal.

The letter says betting companies sponsoring teams and athletes had contributed to the ‘normalising’ of betting, which has ‘serious health and social risks’.

It claims that athletes’ status as role models had led to an increase in gambling among young people aged 18 to 25, rising from 29% to 40% in the last four years.

The amount of money spent by young people in Spain on gambling, meanwhile, had risen by 13% annually.

With the difficulties surrounding COVID-19, La Liga president, Jaiver Tebas, said teams would lose a combined total of US$105 million (AUD$149 million) if they were to exit their gambling deals.

The new plan is set to also limit marketing content from the gambling industry on TV, radio and other video media outlets to be limited to one hour per day between 1am and 5am.

The news comes just one week after the New South Wales government put a ban on gambling advertisements at Big Bash league matches.
