Souths Rugby Union Club will progress the next phase of its clubhouse redevelopment after securing a $1 million investment through Queensland’s Games On! program.
The funding supports Stage 2 of the project, which will deliver a new roof, viewing deck, kitchen, first aid room and upgraded public amenities at the club’s Yeronga base.
The redevelopment aims to enhance the experience for players, coaches, volunteers and local supporters, while strengthening the club’s capacity to host training, competition and community events.
For Souths, which has historically fielded junior and senior programs and contributed players to state and national pathways, the improved facilities are positioned as a long-term investment in accessibility and participation.
Games On! is one of Queensland’s key pre-2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games initiatives focused on upgrading community sporting infrastructure.
While much of the attention on 2032 has centred on major venue planning, the program’s emphasis has been on ensuring that grassroots clubs see tangible legacy benefits. According to state figures, 119 projects across Queensland have been funded to date, with further rounds expected.
For policymakers, the strategic intent is twofold: increasing participation through improved local environments and reinforcing the development pipeline that underpins high-performance sport.
In practical terms, upgraded club facilities can play a role in volunteer retention, match-day operations and athlete welfare, all long-term challenges for community clubs balancing rising demand with constrained resources.
With the 2032 Games now driving infrastructure timelines, community clubs represent a visible touchpoint where the public can see and experience the legacy narrative in action.
For Souths Rugby Union Club, the redevelopment positions the organisation to support increased membership and usage, while also offering improved spectator amenities that may help grow local engagement.
However, like many infrastructure projects across Australian sport, further development stages are likely to be contingent on continued funding support and broader planning alignment.
