In other United States (US) sports news, restrictions put in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic are being eased, allowing for greater attendance numbers at sporting events.
SportsBusiness reports that Capital One Arena and Nationals Park have received approval for full attendance numbers to recommence, with the easing of restrictions in Washington on June 11.
However, full attendance is conditional on the National Hockey League’s (NHL’s) Washington Capitals and the National Basketball Association’s (NBA’s) Washington Wizards going far in the playoffs, according to SportsBusiness.
Meanwhile in New York, Governor Andrew Cuomo, announced there would be a “fully vaccinated fan section” making up half of the Nassau Coliseum for the New York Islanders NHL playoffs due to start on May 19.
In a statement, Cuomo said: “As our positivity and hospitalisation rates go down and our vaccination numbers go up, we are readjusting our reopening strategy to get out economy back up and running.”
“The Islanders have always been Long Island’s team and this new measure to increase capacity will allow more of the team’s passionate fan base to enjoy the final games at the Coliseum and help reenergise the team as they head into the playoffs,” Cuomo said.
