The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has appointed Swiss national Mr. Pierre Ducrey as its new sports director, effective from 1 July.

Ducrey takes over the position from Mr Kit McConnell, who will assume the role of Chief Sport Officer for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games Organising Committee.

His reporting structure will include direct accountability to  IOC Director General, Mr Christophe De Kepper.

Commenting on the appointment, De Kepper said: “I wish Pierre Ducrey every success. His experience within the IOC and the Olympic Movement, and expertise in planning and delivering the Games and in stakeholder management, will be invaluable in the further development of the activities of the Sports Department.”

De Kepper also took the opportunity to acknowledge Kit McConnell’s contributions over the past decade, wishing him the best in his future pursuits and expressing a commitment to ongoing collaboration with both leaders in their new roles.

Ducrey’s journey with the IOC began in 2003 after his tenure at the United Nations in Geneva, where he served as a special advisor promoting peace and development through sport.

At the IOC, he initially focused on athlete-related initiatives and the Olympic program within the Sports Department, before expanding his responsibilities to include relations with International Federations and sports operations.

Notably, since 2010, he has held the role of Olympic Games operations director, playing a crucial part in the execution of both the Olympic and Youth Olympic Games.

In his new capacity as sports director, Ducrey is set to engage closely with International Federations, athletes, and Organising Committees, as well as the Health, Medicine and Science Commissions and the Olympic Program Commissions.
