NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has outlined plans to expand the NFL’s international schedule and explore adjustments to the regular season, aiming to grow the league’s global presence and revenue streams.
The NFL currently hosts five international games annually in the UK and Germany, with plans to grow these markets and explore opportunities in regions like Mexico. Goodell has set a bold goal of increasing this number to 16 within five years, potentially bringing games to Australia by 2026. With global cities eager to host, this expansion is a key step in the league’s strategy.
International games have been vital for reaching new audiences and testing long-term growth initiatives, but challenges such as travel logistics, player welfare, and competitive balance remain. Goodell suggested aligning international expansion with a shift to an 18-game regular season, reducing preseason games from three to two.
“We could be doing more regular season than preseason, so we’re looking at a change from the 17-and-three format to maybe 18 regular-season games and two preseason games,” Goodell said. “And that will open up more inventory to allow us to play more globally.”
However, expanding the regular season requires agreement from the NFL Players Association (NFLPA). Under the current collective bargaining agreement (CBA), which runs through 2030, changes to the schedule would need NFLPA approval. CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones noted players might demand significant concessions, such as an additional bye week, creating a 20-week regular season as part of any deal.
As the NFL navigates these opportunities, balancing growth with player welfare and competitive integrity remains crucial. Goodell’s comments highlight the league’s commitment to global evolution, with further developments expected as these plans take shape.
