NFL and NFLPA Consider an 18-game Regular Season

The NFL Players Association has engaged in preliminary discussions with the NFL regarding the possibility of implementing an 18-game regular season, revealed the union’s executive director.

Lloyd Howell, in a session with Washington Post journalists at the NFLPA’s D.C. headquarters, shared that talks have commenced between the union and the league, although formal negotiations have yet to begin. These discussions signify a tangible step forward in the league and team owners’ pursuit of an 18-game season beyond mere conjecture.

“We have had initial discussions at a high level with a mutual understanding that this is a topic worthy of exploration. Delving deeper into the decision-making process involves understanding various aspects such as where the 18th game fits in. While the notion may be to simply extend the regular season by converting preseason games in August, the intricate details require thorough consideration. Apart from the number of games, other critical factors related to economics, health, and safety demand clarity for our members before any consensus on an 18-game season,” Howell elaborated.

Howell plans to address the subject with players in forthcoming meetings, leaving room for the possibility of implementing an 18-game season pending player approval and the union’s ability to secure favorable terms through potential negotiations with the league and owners. The current labor agreement prohibits unilateral extension of the regular season to 18 games by the league and owners and expires after the 2030 season.

“With a burgeoning business like the NFL, there are opportunities to enhance the existing CBA through amendments and updates before its expiration in 2030. It’s essential to seize these chances for progress rather than revisiting the negotiation process post-career culmination,” Howell emphasized.

Commissioner Roger Goodell has expressed his preference for an 18-game season, advocating for a reduction in preseason games as an equitable trade-off. This sentiment is echoed by several owners, including Dallas Cowboys’ Jerry Jones, who advocate for a shift to 18 games with a corresponding reduction in preseason fixtures.

Howell’s comprehensive remarks underscore a willingness on the part of the NFLPA leadership to engage constructively with the league and owners on this pivotal issue, highlighting a proactive approach towards addressing concerns and potential modifications to enhance various aspects of the game.

The integral decision-making process surrounding an extended season revolves not only around the number of games but also involves considerations such as player welfare, international game placements, bye week allocations, and roster adjustments. These multifaceted discussions aim to strike a balance between economic growth and the well-being of players, steering the NFL towards a sustainable and prosperous future.

As the dialogue evolves, it remains crucial to navigate the complexities of scheduling, player safety, and broader economic implications to ensure a harmonious transition towards a potential 18-game season that serves the best interests of all stakeholders involved.
