Netball Queensland’s Sustainable Fundraising Initiative Container Cup Returns

The Container Cup – Netball Queensland Recycling Challenge will return in 2025, after a successful inaugural year, offering netball associations and clubs across Queensland a dual opportunity to positively impact the environment and to raise crucial funds for their operations.

The programme is supported by an extended three-year partnership between Containers for Change, the Queensland Firebirds, and Netball Queensland, underscoring a shared commitment to sustainability and community involvement.

Commenting on the return of the programme, chief executive officer of Netball Queensland, Kate Davies, said: “The Container Cup proved immensely popular in 2024, spurring associations to get involved and fundraise through container collections.”

“Beyond fundraising, the programme has heightened awareness in the netball community about recycling and sustainable practices,” Davies said.

Chief executive officer of Container Exchange, Natalie Roach, added: “The response to the Container Cup has surpassed expectations, and I’m thrilled to see it back this season.”

“As we approach a remarkable milestone of 10 billion containers returned, which has generated AUD$1 billion in refunds for communities, partnerships like those with the Queensland Firebirds and Netball Queensland have been pivotal in raising awareness and encouraging participation,” Roach said.

The challenge encourages clubs and associations to collect eligible beverage containers throughout the netball season, with top collectors competing for $15,000 in prizes, incentivizing both ecological and financial contributions.

The partnership’s objective is to cultivate a recycling culture within the sport, promoting sustainability and environmental stewardship, including enhanced recycling efforts at stadiums like Nissan Arena, which has already exceeded a 120% container recycling rate.

The Container Cup provides a unique platform for Queensland’s netball community to promote sustainable practices and compete for valuable rewards.
