LA28 builds momentum through local and national cooperation

The recent IOC Coordination Commission meeting held in Los Angeles has resulted in a detailed report highlighting advancements in various operational areas, including security, engagement, and commercial developments regarding the upcoming LA28 Games.

A key takeaway from this meeting is the focus on security, which remains the top priority as coordination efforts continue among local, state, and federal agencies to ensure a safe environment for all involved.

The Organising Committee, in collaboration with the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), has maintained constructive dialogue with officials from the US Administration.

This ongoing communication is reflected in the special status accorded to the Games, which underscores their importance. Both bodies are dedicated to creating an inclusive experience for athletes, officials, and spectators, showcasing the renowned American hospitality in the lead-up to and during the LA28 Games.

Notably, a “unity of effort” was established among LA28, the USOPC, and the State Department to facilitate entry into the country for participants, including those involved in pre-Games competitions and support personnel such as broadcasters.

There is also a growing emphasis on local and national engagement initiatives. The PlayLA programme, which is a youth sports initiative stemming from the IOC-LA28 partnership aimed at investing up to USD 160 million, has successfully surpassed 900,000 enrolments.

Additionally, the national engagement strategy saw Wasserman recently address the US Conference of Mayors, representing over 1,400 cities. In this address, he presented plans for the Olympic Torch Relay, an initiative designed to foster unity across the nation by making stops in all 50 states.

As the LA28 Games draw closer, several important announcements are anticipated this year, marking an important milestone as the event approaches the three-years-to-go mark.

Key updates expected to be disclosed include the full competition schedule, the list of football host cities across the United States, and the Games Impact and Sustainability Strategy, which aims to leave a lasting positive legacy.
