Justin Langer named as Australia’s new head coach

Good news for Australian cricket with former Test opener Justin Langer named as the new head coach of the mens team.

After the recent ball tampering scandal and the resignation of Darren Lehmann, Langer has the tough responsibility of leading Cricket Australia out of the most challenging periods in the history of the sport.

He has been given a four-year term which takes in two Ashes series, next year’s World Cup in England and the World Twenty20 to be held in 2020 in Australia. He will start on May 22.

Cricket Australia’s chief executive James Sutherland, described Langer as the “standout” candidate after his “recent coaching and player development achievements.”

“Justin’s work ethic, leadership and values are among his strongest attributes, and he is widely respected across the global cricket community.” said Sutherland.

Langer wore the baggy green in 105 Test matches spanning over 20 years, scoring 7,500 runs, including 23 centuries.

Taking over as the head coach in Western Australia in 2012, Langer has won three Big Bash League titles with the Perth Scorchers and led WA to two one-day crowns

Langer said he was honoured to be given the job.

“It is humbling to be appointed as coach of the Australian men’s cricket team,” Langer said.

“I would like to thank the Western Australian Cricket Association and the Perth Scorchers for their support over the past six seasons, and for giving me the opportunity to lead and work with two great teams and many exceptional people.

“There will be some significant challenges ahead for our group, but there is a wealth of talent in Australian cricket that I know will do us all proud.
