merican broadcast giant, CBS, has entered into a three-year broadcast agreement with Formula E which will see them air the all-electric motor racing series exclusively as of the 2020/21 season, until the end of the 2022/23 season.
As part of the agreement, CBS will use its platforms to stream a 90-minute broadcast of each of the global racing series races.
Races held in July in New York and in London will appear on the CBS national commercial network, as well as eight additional events on the CBS’ Sports Network pay-TV channel.
CBS Sports Digital platforms such as PlutoTV will show all qualifying sessions, and the remainder of the races.
Shoulder programming and qualifying action are also encompassed within the agreement, with a particular show race occurring each week.
CBS Sports executive vice president of programming, Dan Weinberg, told Sportico that the agreement would include “well over 100 hours” worth of viewing content.
Formula E’s chief media officer, Aarti Dabas, said: “CBS is a leading media network in the USA with an impressive multi-platform offering and a growing portfolio of premium international sports content.”
Since the 2014/15 season, Fox was responsible for broadcasting Formula E in the US.
Formula E has raced in the US ever since its inception six years ago, and has grown in popularity since, introducing the racing to five hew boroughs in New York in 2017.
The two US-based race teams currently on their grid include Dragon-Penske Autosport and BMW-Andretti Motorsport.
The all-electric SUV sister series’ US rights are now held by Discovery’s dedicated subscription streaming service, Motortrend, and Fox.
NBC currently stands at the top of the motorsport market, with NBC having IndyCar and Nascar rights agreements set to run until 2024, the Nascar agreement will be shared with Fox.
Cable network ESPN serves as Formula One’s exclusive US broadcast partner.
