Former Gymnastics Australia CEO Banned For “Judging Irregularities”

Former Gymnastics Australia CEO, and current National Sports Tribunal (NST) deputy CEO, Kitty Chiller, has received a sanction from the International Gymnastics Federation for “judging irregularities”.

The organisation, along with the Disciplinary Commission of the Gymnastics Ethics Foundation, has banned Chiller from representing the International Gymnastics Federation for two years, as well as fining Gymnastics Australia $7,200, and sanctioning two judges and a technical director.

The incident was reported as taking place at the 2021 Oceania Continental Championships in rhythmic gymnastics, which served as Australia’s Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games trials.

Chiller, Gymnastics Australia, the two judges and the technical director will have 21 days to appeal the sanctions, with Gymnastics Australia reportedly set to deliberate on a decision before potentially launching an appeal, with a spokesperson saying it “will take some time to consider the decision and next steps for the organisation and the sport”.

Chiller, currently serving as National Sports Tribunal deputy CEO, will reportedly remain in her current role, with the National Sports Tribunal telling the ABC the events occurred prior to Chiller’s appointment.

“Ms Chiller has had, and will have, no involvement in any Gymnastics matters (of any sort) which come to the NST,” the organisation said, confirming Chiller will remain as part of the organisation which serves as Australia’s impartial forum for resolving complaints in Australian sport.

Chiller left her role at Gymnastics Australia in January after leading the organisation for four years, amid an independent review of culture and practice at all levels led by the Australian Human Rights Commission into a reported culture of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse in gymnastics.

The independent review led to an official apology released by the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) to former Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) gymnasts who experienced incidents of bullying, abuse, sexual harassment, misconduct and at least one reported case of sexual assault.
