Ministry of Sport spoke to Getty Images chief photographer, Cameron Spencer, about this year in sport.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games were the biggest sporting event of the year, one that almost didn’t happen due to COVID-19.

“With a lack of sport in Australia this year due to COVID-19, the opportunity to go to Tokyo was pretty exciting,” Spencer told Ministry of Sport.

“I think the Games in the end was way better than expected for athletes and also the media that were there,” he said.

COVID-19 restrictions and mandates made capturing the historic event more difficult than usual, but Spencer said it was worth it.

“There were lots of strict protocols, but we were able to do our jobs pretty much as normal, just with certain access restrictions and wearing PPE, various masks and testing every day,” Spencer said.

“It just became a kind of ritual every morning you knew what you had to do and getting on with it,” he said.

Photographing some of the best athletes in the world, Spencer said capturing Jess Fox and Elaine Thompson were a highlight of his year.

“She’s (Fox) one of Australia’s most successful athletes at the Olympics and she was seeing her getting her get her gold finally was pretty exciting,” Spencer said.

“Seeing her carve up a slalom course is pretty impressive.

“Thompson came flying through to take victory by only the smallest of margins and basically celebrated straight at me with her arms out screaming.

“That was one of the more exciting moments,” he said.

Despite the disruptions in sport this year due to COVID-19, Spencer said the adaptation of sporting bodies was another highlight of the year.

“In Australia, this year it was pretty impressive how sporting bodies were fluid in the ways they moved competitions and made things happen,” Spencer said.

Discussing the future evolution of Getty Images, Spencer said: “We evolve with digital technology.”

“There is a big focus for online galleries and online clients now.

“There is a lot involved with clearances and copyright and permissions from the talent in the images and the sporting body hosting the event.

“I think in this industry you need to embrace change cause it is forever changing,” he told Ministry of Sport.
