Docklands Stadium has been announced as one of eight host venues for the Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027, following a global announcement by tournament organisers.
Docklands Stadium will stage eight matches in total, comprising six pool fixtures and two Round of 16 encounters.
The decision further cements the stadium’s reputation as a world-class destination, having recently been ranked as the fifth highest-grossing stadium globally in the 2025 Pollstar Worldwide Stadium rankings.
The selection marks the return of the tournament to the precinct for the first time since 2003, when the venue hosted seven matches.
Notably, Docklands Stadium will be the only fully enclosed venue in the competition; organisers have confirmed the retractable roof will remain closed for the duration of the tournament to ensure “perfect conditions” for players and fans.
This advantage was a key factor in the organisation’s successful bid over the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), which was unavailable due to conflicting commercial agreements.
Commenting on the venue announcement, general manager of Marvel Stadium, Scott Fitzgerald, said: “The announcement of our venue further showcases our evolution into a 365-day-a-year destination for fans.”
“From elite sport to concerts and everything in between, 2026 is shaping up to be another busy year which already has a suite of major events in the calendar,” Fitzgerald said.
The announcement highlights a commercial and operational countdown for the Victorian government and venue management.
The tournament is expected to drive record tourism to Melbourne, following the stadium’s “Best Outdoor Venue” win at the 2025 Live Events Awards.
Match Schedule Release: The full 2027 match schedule and ticket pricing will be officially revealed on Tuesday, 3 February 2026.
Presale Opportunity: Fans must register a ticketing account by 17 February to participate in an exclusive two-week presale starting 18 February 2026.
2026 Events: Before the World Cup preparations begin, the venue will host global superstar Ed Sheeran in February, followed by the Western Bulldogs’ AFL season opener on 14 March 2026.
The 2027 tournament will be the first in history to feature 24 teams, and Melbourne’s allocation of Round of 16 matches places the city at the heart of the newly expanded knockout format.
