The Family of League Foundation has appointed Darren Gocher as its new CEO, effective 25 November 2024. This leadership change follows the retirement of former CEO Stephen Lowndes, who led the organisation for over six years.

Chair Helen Wood Grant expressed confidence in Gocher’s leadership, stating, “On behalf of the Board, we could not be more delighted to appoint Darren as our new executive leader to take us into an even more successful future.” She highlighted his extensive experience across the sport, not-for-profit, media, and finance sectors, noting that such a background is essential for the 22-year-old charity dedicated to serving the rugby league family.

Gocher’s professional history includes roles as CEO of Equestrian Australia and Athletics Australia, along with senior executive positions at News Corp, Penn Health, and Yahoo!. A Chartered Accountant who began his career at KPMG, Gocher also has a deep-rooted connection to rugby league.

He refereed for 20 years, progressing from Junior League to the NRL, and officiated as a touch judge in over 100 NRL games, State of Origin matches, and test matches. Currently, he serves on the board of Wheelchair Rugby League Australia and was the team manager during their recent successful Trans-Tasman test series in New Zealand.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the role, Gocher stated, “I am incredibly honoured to have the opportunity to lead such a wonderful organisation. The work that Family of League does in our community is inspirational and provides incredible support for those who need it.” He also acknowledged the potential for growth, adding, “The potential to grow and expand is enormous, and I am excited to be able to contribute to the next phase of the journey.”

The Family of League Foundation, formerly known as Men of League, was established in 2002 by rugby league greats Ron Coote, Jim Hall, and Max Brown. Over the past 22 years, the foundation has provided over 10,000 hours of volunteer service and $10 million in financial support to those in need within the rugby league community. Its mission is to ensure that individuals facing hardship can access financial, social, and emotional support.

This leadership transition marks a new chapter for the Family of League Foundation as it continues to uphold its commitment to the rugby league community under Gocher’s guidance.
