risbane has been officially named the host of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games following an International Olympic Committee (IOC) voting session in Tokyo.

The 87 IOC member votes resulted in the Brisbane bid securing majority votes and being named the host of Australia’s third Olympic Games after Sydney in 2000 and Melbourne in 1956.

The bid process was finalised after presentations from Australia’s delegation which included Queensland premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk, Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison via video call, Federal Sports Minister, Richard Colbeck, and Brisbane Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner.

IOC president, Thomas Bach, announced the results of the uncontested vote from Tokyo at the IOC member session.

Australian Prime Minister, spoke with Channel Seven after the announcement, saying: “How good is Brisbane, how good is Queensland, and how good is Australia.”

“The whole world is going to see it again and we’re absolutely stoked about this.

“Congratulations to everyone involved… this is a great ray of hope for us at a time when I think all Australians really need it,” he said.

Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee president, Hashimoto Seiko, immediately congratulated both Australia and Brisbane for being named the host.

“My heartfelt congratulations go to the people of Brisbane and Australia,” Hashimoto said.

“Over the past year, the world’s sporting community has faced the multiple challenges of COVID-19; however, under the steadfast leadership of IOC president Thomas Bach, the Olympic movement has made steady progress, culminating in today’s decision in favour of Brisbane.

“I am confident that the Olympic movement will continue to gain momentum as it moves from Tokyo to Paris, from Paris to Los Angeles, and finally on to Brisbane,” she said.
