Brisbane International Tennis Cancelled

The announcement of the Australian Summer of Tennis calendar revealed the and ATP Cup and Brisbane International will not take place in Queensland next January.

Brisbane International Tennis said: “The past two years have been challenging on so many levels and everyone involved did everything possible to bring international tennis back to Queensland this summer.”

“We understand this is disappointing news for our fans, and while we are unable to bring our usual tennis programming to life in 2022, we look forward to welcoming everyone back in 2023,” they said.

The national tournament for the ATP Cup is expected to be played in Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne, and regional Victoria.

The bumper program is expected to begin on New Year’s Day with the 16-team ATP Cup from 1-9 January.

Sydney is also expected to host the new, one-off Sydney Tennis Classic from 2-9 January, featuring a WTA 500 and ATP 250 in a combined men’s and women’s event.

Regional Victoria’s Bendigo and Traralgon is expected to host ATP Challenger and ITF Women’s tournaments from 2-9 January.

Tennis Australia CEO, Craig Tiley, said: “We have worked closely with both the women’s and men’s tour and would like to particularly thank our government partners across the country who have all been tireless in their efforts to bring the tennis back in 2022.”

“I know it was sorely missed this year, and we are already planning to have a full program of events across the country in 2023.

“It’s also fantastic to bring tennis back to regional Victoria, where I know the local communities of Bendigo and Traralgon will welcome these global events with open arms.

“It is not news to anyone that the pandemic, closed borders and varying rates of vaccination created a massive challenge for us and led to the changes specifically for the summer,” Tiley said.
